They are used on tunnel rams to better place the venturies over the intake runners.This is done on tall deck height motors aka big cubic inch motors IHRA prostock 815 or promods.When you raise the deck height the cylinder heads are farther apart therfore the intake runners are farther apart to compensate for this they split the carb in half to place the venturies over the runners to increase the signal to the carb.
