I have a 72 Skylark, my speedometer is squeeking when I drive, how can I quiet it down? Can I use WD40 and spray the back of the speedometer. I have the dash apart and the gauge cluster pulled away from the dash. Thanks Tim
You will have to remove the cable from the trannie end to get it out of the casing . Remove the cable from the plastic housing and wipe it down with "speedometer lube only " . Reinstall and test . If that does not cure it , order a cable replacement . They dry up over the years and you have to relube ... p :TU:
I hate to say this but it could be your speedometer that is making the noise. I have the same problem and a new cable didn't make it go away.
Both of you could be correct, but I would go with the cable first. I use a little white litheum grease on the cables.
Hmm, I've never messed with a speedo cable. So, no underdash work is needed? Just have to pull it out the tranny end of the plastic sheath? My 89 F150 has been squeaking at me a bit lately, might have to check it out.
I had a similar problem in a "Chebby" and it turned out the cable was a bit to long and it was loading the bearings or bushings in the speedometer head and making it squek. I cut about a 1/8" off the cable at the tranny end and everything went silent. Good luck Mike D.
