My speedometer stopped working a while back. I disconnected the cable from the back of the head today. Shouldn't the inner cable spin while I'm driving? I don't know if I should replace the cable or the whole speedometer. Is there a way to tell which one is bad? I have a 73 Buick Centurion.
Have an assistant remove the cable from the trans. Have them spin the inner cable while you watch you end. It should work Your driven gear inside the speedo housing may be stripped or worn out.
Speedometer Cable Problem Gents, I pulled my inner metal speedo cable out of the plastic housing while sitting inside the car. It was obvious that a couple of inches were missing. I went under the car, disconnected plastic outer housing at the transmission and found the other inch or so of inner cable sticking out of the transmission. My problem is that the little inch long piece of cable will not come out. Is it OK to attach a pair of vice grips and yank the crap out of it? Will something break off in the transmission if I do? I will probably post this question in the transmission section as well.
Best bet is to raise the rear of the car and put it on jack stands. Get a small ratchet and remove the C-clip that holds the speedo housing in the trans. Now, you can look at the speedo gear and see what your problem is. Cable should easily slide out of the speedo gear shaft. If it is bound, then this may have caused the cable to break. If you need another cable, local yard has a 75 Electra and I "believe" it still has the speedo cable in it.
