I am changing out my speedo cable on the 71 gsx ( the outside casing is melted through and siphoning tranny oil when sitting and probably driving).
Question: can the cable somehow be removed from the back of the speedo without taking the dash pad off and pulling the dash cluster forward? I did a search but came up dry on this one. I just put the dash in on my 71 skylark a few months ago and it seems impossible to do with out disassembly of the dash. thanks Gord

If you take off the under dash column piece and drop the steering column you might be able to use a long thin mini pry bar to release the tab while you pull the speedo cable from near the brake pedal where you can reach it. That is how I got mine off (and on - which took a couple of tries) when I had to lube the inner cable.

I think you need to push the clip in not pull it out.

    >>Yes, you push in the clip to release it. The mini pry bar has a bent edge I used to push in the clip on my speedo cable end.

Very simple, just remove the radio, you should be able to reach the cable from there,it will also be easier to install it.Bruno.

Well I got the speedo cable done, I was a piece of cake after the advice on the board. I dropped the steering column and set the steering wheel on a cheap axle stand and had lots of room to get my hand in to release the clip. Thanks again Gord
