Does anybody have the buzzer that is used with the speed minder? I would sure appreciate knowing the part number or even better a picture of it.
I'm looking at a speedometer that has the mechanical parts, but no buzzer itself so I'm trying to figure out how to add it.

    thanks for all help.

Where is the buzzer located? I can check my 67 stuff when i get home (if no one else can answer the question by then)

My Riviera has the turkey-buzzer, but it is integrated with the drum speedo, from what I can tell. There's a reed switch which gets actuated when the drum's rotated to the set speed, and I don't see where it can be taken apart. I'll check my online chassis manuals for more info.

On later models A bodies it is actually the horn relay and machine-screwed under the dash sheet metal near the glovebox.

On a 67 it's around the top of the brake pedal arm on the steering column support. It's REALLY hard to see. It looks similar to a later Buick key buzzer deal, it has a built in bracket like that, but only has 3 terminals.

I don't have my parts book in front of me, but you can buy a repro on ebay that should work.

    Jon,

I should have that part then. wWen I get home I can pull the number of it (or if you want a used working original I'll sell it).

By the way, this is for a 67 skylark, so the newer cars probably use a different system.

Doing some round about searching and reading in the chassis manual and the online part number look up, it seems the Speedometer safety buzzer for 62-67, all buicks is GM # 1386278 coming from section 9.762 of the parts manual.

Looking on Ebay, I see a couple similar things like this.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/1967-1968-P...Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d349e086c&vxp=mtr

There is also this 67 impala gauge cluster here http://www.ebay.com/itm/1967-CHEVY-...Parts_Accessories&hash=item27c7aea026&vxp=mtr

One of their additional pictures shows the back of the cluster in this picture.

It looks like it bolts to the top of the gauge cluster and looks much like a standard relay, very similar to the relay that is used for the power windows and is bolted to the firewall.
    However, it somehow buzzes.
The chassis manual gives the wiring and how it works definition pretty clearly, and all the mechanical part is included with the speedometer cluster, then you just hook up power to the gauge, thru the buzzer and to ground. When the speed minder clicks on, it completes the circuit and makes a buzz.
No problem, but the way the chassis manual describes it, it seems like their should only be 2 terminals on the buzzer, but this picture kinda looks like it might have 3.

So, I'm searching for a buzzer, GM#1386278 that isn't stupid expensive and not having a lot of luck. I will continue to search and see what else might interchange with that. Maybe a simple aftermarket buzzer will be fine but it would be nice to have "the" buzzer.

Anyway, after finding this, I'm just wondering if anyone could verify or suggest what to use.

    Jon,

my '67 had a working speedminder (scared the bejesus out of me the first time it clicked on :eek2:)
Here's a picture of what the back of my cluster looked like, there was nothing like what you have pictured attached to it.

not sure if that helps you any.

So bill, do you have one of the buzzers that function? One of the old ones? If I end up buying this gauge that has the speedminder, I will definitely be looking for a buzzer to use. The picture I posted was from an impala but up in this thread somebody (MrOlds) mentioned that Buick put theirs elsewhere.

Let me know if you have one, and pending my purchasing this gauge, I may want a buzzer too.

    Thanks

When I get home tonight (working till 9pm), i'll check the spot MrOlds mentions, and yes if it's there it's for sale. It worked when it was in the car, though I suppose I could try to bench test to double check.

Right, it's where I said, it's hard to see. It has 3 terminals and looks like the one in the pic but has a different bracket. I know how to test them.

I didn't see anything on the steering column, and couldn't find the brake pedal parts last night (spelunking around my garage trying to be quiet and not wake the wife/baby/dogs) I'll check again this Wed during the day when i can make some noise. Assuming no one else comes up with something for you.

MrOlds, so if I had taken everything apart it would be on the bracket with the brake pedal as opposed to still being attached to the steering column correct?

hmmm, still can't find it.:idea2: not sure where that went.
I'll give it another shot this weekend.

    Any luck finding it elsewhere?

If you can take a picture, maybe that'll help me find mine (assuming you aren't looking to sell yours to as well)

No, I'm not looking to sell. I did not get over to the car. I've replaced my buzzer before. It's not on the column, if I remember right, it's on the big bracket that the brake arm (and I think column?) attaches to. The big piece that's always rusty. It's on the left hand side of the column. It's way up and hard to find. There is a repro Camaro buzzer on ebay for 50-60. that should work and mount in the same place.

Ah, the ole' speed buzzer. Used to annoy my father with his '69 skylark by setting it to 20 MPH and it would drive him crazy!!

The ebay auction with the speedometer that had the speed minder in it sold to somebody else, so I'm not switching mine out. It went for a good price, however after finding out the guy took the picture of the gauge with the clock in it, but then when I asked him for additional pictures he sent me some from the back with the clock out and told me that "sorry, I sold the clock in a different auction" I decided to walk away.
If you put this photo as the ONLY photo in your ebay auction, it better include the damn clock.

I have a feeling whoever did buy it will be leaving negative feedback.

Still $45 including shipping is a good price, but.... I'm not playing that game.

    Frank,
Could you tell me how to test these? My original one which I believe is GM #3904843 (but it's unmarked) has the three terminals (pic attached).
The points are normally closed and each side of the points goes to its own terminal. The third terminal goes through a resistor and to the coil. I know the speedminder sends a ground to the buzzer which means 12v has to go to both terminals that go to the points?? I can expect that this old buzzer doesn't work but don't understand how it buzzes.
I picked up another one (gm #1115866) and haven't opened it up yet but this one has continuity between all three terminals.
Appreciate any help, this is really getting frustrating.
