Space between my A/C belt and alternator

    Hi !
I replaced my water pump and put back my belts on a 350 Buick from a Skylark '70 but my A/C belt seems too close from the alternator (about 0.12 inches from it). It seems to me too close but is it normal ?

I think it was already like that before changing the water pump but I did not pay attention. Thanks,

Looks normal to me. Although you have the wrong fan on the alternator. Putting the correct fan on would increase the spacing

    alec296 i need another buick

Looks right. As long as tension on belt is good you should be fine. It rides in the alternator pulley as a guide so you should not have a problem

I think part of it is what Jason mentioned about the plate on the face of the fan. I think it maybe should have a double pulley, that "408" job. GM made a ton of pulleys with ever so sleight differences. If you have the wrong fan on the alt, you can be pretty sure you have the wrong pulley, too.

Yes, Frank is correct, The pulley is wrong also. The correct one has more space in between the grooves

    Thank you !

    Great ! I didnt know.

The A/C belt isn't in the alternator pulley but it goes a few inches above.

Correct, but the right pulley would space out the belts better. If it ever stops raining out, I'll take a pic of my car for you to show you the difference

Now it looks like it may be the right pulley. There were many different double pulleys made, too. Some 408's have the number on the face, some don't. In the first 2 pics, you can clearly see the AC belt is out of line. These kinds of things are really hard to tell from pics. From the new pics you just posted, it looks like the AC belt is too high off the pulley. I know it doesn't touch, but it looks too high to me. So...the belt is too short? You can tell by where the adjustment bolt falls in the compressor slot. The adjustment bolt should always be arond the middle of the slot. Actually, a little less to allow for stretch. if it's around the middle, you can get the belt on and off easily. Though the whole belt issue I'm talking about is related to their length. Not how far apart they are. Check to see if there's a number on the face of the pulley. Like Jason said, the fan's got to be changed or that plate removed. It's a start...

Now I'm looking again, yeah...different issue but the AC belt is definitely short.

I got the right double pulley with 1961408 number on the face.
You're right : my A/C belt looks too short. I got an AC Delco #15612 (61 inches in total length) but there is too a #15625 (62.5 inches) available for my car on Rockauto.com.
Mark Demko, it's almost like mine.
    Thank you !
