Anyone think it would be a good idea for the BPG member roster to be "sortable"?

    Example...
I wanted to see how many members were from Ohio, and/or see who might be near me. I have to look through the entire list.
It would be neat if I could click on "State" and they would re-organize by state in alphabetical order.

Or maybe I want to see who all has 67's....
Or who the lifetime members are...
Or who's dues are past due...

You get the point I'm sure :gt:

I'd be willing to hammer out a few hours of HTML code to get the current list updated so JW (or whoever does the website upkeep) could upload it.
From there, new entries would be entered as usual by whoever is doing it now. It would just be a little different layout when adding them.

    Penny for your thoughts? :)

Glad to see some votes, but kind of suprised there's no comments to back your opinions, or improve the concept?

I'm thinking at this point, there's only 475 or so members to scroll through.... but in a few years, there'll be thousands, and a sorting feature would be very handy. Not only for us members, but management as well, I would assume. And the sooner you implement it, the less work it'll be to make the switch to the web page.

...there is going to be thousands ......... right?
     :TU:

I've cut/pasted the entire membership table into Excel and sorted it there.

  4. Marco, I was just thinking that is the simple solution. It would be a nice feature anyway though. I was thinking the same thing last week when I was looking for members from MN ND IA SD, etc.

That's the way the roster started out as....... Kris was looking for a way to keep track of the members, so I made up an Excel sheet. We used it until about January, when Mike Bucy started taking care of it instead of me. I am not sure if he still uses the sheet, but it would make sense that it's not changed as that was the handiest way to do it.

    Guys,

Whatever you want to come up with for member use is fine by me..

In the office here, we have a killer database program that Bucy made up, that I use. It generates that list you see on the website automatically, updating that list takes about 2 seconds.

I put your information into the database only once.. and we do a lot of stuff with it from there... Like generate all the labels for the newsletters, all your membership cards, and it does it automatically in a mail merge program.

    Jeff -

I put my mouse on the first entry in the first column (BPG #) and press and hold the left mouse button (for right handed people). I basically drag the mouse over the entire table till the last row/column.

    Press CTRL+C to copy

    Open Excel

Click CTRL+P to paste (or click the clipboard)

    So,

I see there are 104 members who paid their 2002 membership dues but have not become active for 2003.

Have they been sent a letter prompting them to register for the new year? I know it is trivial, but a letter prompting them to register may get some of them to become active members again.

    Just a thought.

Jim, if you send me thier addresses I can send the letter. Or if you just want me to write the letter and forward it to you so you can cut and paste and send out. Or whatever. I'd just like to keep our membership alive.

    Just a thought...

  10. Jeff, it sounds like the roster as seen on the BPG site is not quite up to date. I know myself and Chris (hemikllrstg1) have had our membership dates listed incorrectly for some time, but I know from Jim that the BPG database has been corrected, just not reflected on the site yet. I'll bet those 104 aren't all unpaid currently.

    David's correct..

I don't believe that Mike has had a chance to update that roster since the last go-around of membership renwals/updates.

Jeff.. Yes, we are going to send reminder letters, and thanks for the offer to help.

I will set you up with the letter, and you let me know on the postage/materials costs, and the club will cover those costs, and send you check.

Let's let it go another month or so, I am still gettting a fair amount of renewals.

    Hmmm
Sounds like a database already exists for the "management" to use..... So those reasons are out the window.

But would it be worth doing it for the rest of us?
How about I throw one together in the next week or so as a sample. I'll upload it to my own webspace and provide a link for members to check it out.

    Sound like a plan?
Or would I be wasting my time?

Frankly, I get enough junk mail. Non-members can peel the email addresses right off of the web site, and it doesn't take much of a program to get our email address (and potentially this other information) and send me more junk mail.

    No thanks.

    Hi Bob
I understand and agree with you 150%.
I'm not proposing to add any new info to the member roster. I'm only proposing to make it sortable.
As of right now, the info in the roster is limited to:
    Member #
    Name
    City
    State
    Country
    Membership Status

Well......I guess I would like to see one more column.....
"What year/make of Buick(s) you own"

But I agree totally that private information should be kept private. And to me, "private" info should include:
    Address, Email, & Phone number

Maybe my using the term "database" led you to believe I wanted to include all the private stuff in the sortable roster. Sorry....that isn't my intent.
