Sometimes I would just like stuff to work!

    Sigh.

I just got my new Barry Grant Mighty Demon 850 carb with vacuum secondaries and annular boosters.

The bracket that mounts the AC idle compensator solenoid had to be modified to fit it from the Holley.

9 stitches in the leg and 2 Percasets later I finally got it fabbed up (I dropped the right angle grinder and it hit the ground and ran into my leg - very ugly gash).

I fired up the Riv and it refuses to idle below 1500 RPM. Well, that's not entirely true. I can get it to idle at 900, but then both the primary and secondary transfer slots are covered (don't ask me how it even idles if none of the idle circuit is visible below the throttle blades). And it is pretty doggy off the line.

BG Tech had me drill out the 4 outer air bleeds, with little to no difference.

Dang. I bought it from Summit, but on Monday I'm going to tell BG Tech that I'm shipping it back to them. I think there is a problem here and with Salem 3 weeks away I don't have time to screw around with this.

I am HOPING they will just replace it, but I'm EXPECTING nothing but a bunch of BS. It seems almost nobody in business will stand behind their work or product any moare and just do what is right for the customer. In this case, a clean swap. We'll see. I hope they do the right thing.

Although, what will I do if another new carb won't idle below 1500 RPM either??? :puzzled: :Do No:

Oh, and nothing has changed on the car either. The Holley began leaking at the throttle shaft so I decided to just replace the whole carb.

Just once I'd like something to go smoothly... (we'll the hospital ER trip was kinda smooth...)

OK, so you've been grinding and drilling on their product and you want them to say "That's ok, here's your money back". I hope they don't examine it when they recieve it!

I had no problem with mine when we took it out of the box and straight to the dyno (well, we did change the jets a few times). :Smarty:

Um, let me know if they don't exchange. We should be able to get it to work on one of he Cobra engines, and swap you for it. And if we can't, I'm sure we can probably return it being a BG distributor...

Doug, the part I was grinding on and modifying is an aftermarket Holley bracket. BG doesn't make one for their carbs. The tech told me I'd have to mod the Holley part to get it to work. And it worked fine.

Dan, I will let you know what they say. Can you give me your phone number? You can PM it to me.

There isn't a Demon dealer within many miles of me. Something like this I would prefer to pay a little premium for and get through a shop, but then again, the speed shops around here all just pass the consumer off to the manufacturer anyway.

The tech wanted me to "elongate" the transfer slots by ramming a .020" feeler gauge into it (after I cut it to an angled point). I refuse to modify any part of a new piece like this. I leave that up to the factory techs.

I'm much obliged Dan. So far I'm happy with BG tech, kinda, but very dissatisfied with the product.

One tech told me this carb would "never idle below 1000 to 1100" because it is meant for huge cams. But I fail to believe that.

    Thanks again!

And the stitches come out Friday...

Give em heck Yardley :blast: It's not too much to ask that something work out of the box. The reality is that not much does, but that doesn't make it right.

    Yeah Rick.

The whole reason I bought a Demon is because I have seen terrible Holley quality lately and wanted to go with some real quality stuff. I like the milled billet metering blocks and baseplate and the nice new design and casting of the body.

I hope they back their stuff as good as it looks.

please don't be offended but it sounds like a vacuum leak to me.

    Andy,

Glad you said it, that's what I was thinkin' too, probably too simple though.

And I thought I had bad luck, good luck getting it going, Yardley :TU:

Maybe if you hadn't been taking the Percasets, you wouldn't have dropped the grinder.

That's what I thought too. But the only hose goint to the carb or manifold that was attached was the one for the brake booster. No, I didn't try plugging it up. But the Holley idled fine at 900 when I took it off - and I had visible transfer slots in the primaries.

I even used 2 different baseplate gaskets with this carb to rule that out too.

If it was a vacuum leak, wouldn't it run worse as I closed off the idle mixture screws? As I close them it runs better. It seems like it is getting gas from somewhere else other than the idle circuit.

Yards, I haven't seen a Demon yet that didn't work right, right out of the box. I put an 850 marine version of yours, on one of my boats with an LS6 this past week, and I am amazed how well it ran, right out of the box, against the factory *prepped* Holley HP I took off.

Yeah, it sounds stronger and smoother at the 1500 RPM idle than the Holley I took off.

I'm still worried that something else let go that I'm not seeing. I don't suppose an intake gasket could've let go all of a sudden. So I'm stumped as to what else it could be - IF it isn't a carb problem...

Maybe I'll call TA and order a new pair of gaskets just in case...

How long did you have it running and do they spray it with a cleaner before they send it? I just took some carb cleaner to mine yesterday. I had to go somewhere later in the day and my idle was almost 1500rpm and wouldn't drop no matter what I did and I had to leave so I drove it with the high idle and after about 10 minutes of driving it dropped back down to normal.

Yards, put the Holley back on for grins, and see what happens....

Tried that. The throttle shaft leaks so badly that it will barely even run. It needs a new baseplate, but I recall Holley telling me a new one can't be put on this carb. I could be wrong... These bushings they put on the shaft only lasted a few thousand miles.

I drove it and let it idle about 1/4 tank of gas with the Demon. If it was going to drop, I think it would have by then.

Funny thing about the Demon... they have an idle adjustment screw inside the air cleaner stud hole. They talk it up real good in all their ads and literature. This one made no difference at all. And both their techs said that it wouldn't make any difference.

    :puzzled:

If it won't make any difference, then why have it at all? I wonder in what case it WOULD make a difference???
