On the Riv I had one of the courtsey lights under the dash out. I found it had no bulb in it. I replaced it with a bulb that looked like the one in the other fixtures and when I closed the doors none of them went off. They had been working just fine untill then. After checking the dash switch and both door switches and finding no problem I pulled out the new bulb and the system worked as it should. What is up with that?
I might expect something like that from an AMC, but not my Buick! LOL

Check the contacts in the base of the socket. Some of the dash lightbulns use a double contact in the base. If you used a bulb that has a single contact at the base it will short the double contact and cause the type problem you describe. "Looks like" doesn't make it right.

sounds like you stuck a singe contact bulb in a dual contact fixture.

if you are dealing with those "peanut" looking bulbs, make sure the wire contacts dont get bent sideways.

I got into my trusty manual and looked up the bulb type. It said a # 89 bulb.I had put a 63 bulb in it. only difference between the 2 is the candle power. the 63 is much brighter. both have single post on the bottom and are the same in physical size. however, now it works as it should. Weird. Thanks for your imput. Steve :Dou:
