Im doing my first restoration on a 1970 Skylark. i wanted some advise that will help me along the way. with the price of fuel shooting through the roof my main concern is gas mileage i dont want the thing to be gutless. things like what to do to the rear end and what cam shaft will work best and any other sort of ideas that will help me out in general. thank you.
I'm going to assume you are using a 350 Buick engine. I would aim for 9.5:1 compression with a smaller cam like the TA212. Use a Quadrajet carburetor. Then use no more than a 3.08 rear gear. You could also go with more rear gear (up to 3.73) if you use a THM200R4 transmission. That combination would give you the best performance and gas mileage. The 1st gear of 2.75, and the .67 overdrive is a sweet combination.
thank you very much. it is the buick 350. are all those parts available from other buicks or are they available brand new?
You can buy the THM200R4 from TCI www.tciauto.com or cheaper from Mail order places like Sumitt Racing. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=TCI-381500&N=700+0&autoview=sku You may have trouble finding a ring and pinion for the 1970 8.2 10 bolt rear you have. I recommend you contact Monzaz on this V8 board. He can help in that regard. As far as camshaft and rebuild engine parts. Everything is available new from TA Performance. www.taperformance.com
