been having lots of problems with my newly purchased skylark convertible.

back from the garage only it wont shift to 3rd DOH (as mentioned earlier). This seems to get worse as the engine warms up. ie. in the morning when I go to work it will shift most of the time, then during the journey as the engine warms it wont shift at all... I hope this may just be some kind of adjustment somewhere rather than something more serious. THe transmission fluid was replaced and a new torque converter added.

I noticed the other day something I had missed previously a rubber pipe which looks like its coming from the windscreen washer pump (fairly thick rubber) which is not attached to anything

A metal pipe with white fabric insulation that conencts to the carburettor which is no longer attached to anything. I believe this is to improve the vaccum or something and should connect to the engine somewhere(what is the technical name for this?)

The main positive battery cable has frayed and melted so the bare wires are exposed which I take to be a BAD Thing. How easy is it to connect a new one without putting the car on jacks. It seems pretty fiddly to access the starter motor.

Anyone got a diagram of the engine with labels to show what each piece is and what each pipe is connected to or do I just need to go out and buy the shop manual?

Hmmm might be the vacuum modulator. It'll help regulate the shift pints, but it shouldn't prevent a 2-3 shift. Hook it back up to any vaccuum source and see what happens...
