Hey fellow buick lovers. i seem to be having problems getting my buick started. For the 3rd time in as many weeks i have snaped my starter gear right in half. could my timing just be to high? or could it be something else? any ideas, suggestions would be most welcomed. Thanks

Sounds like a timing issue to me.

Verify your flexplate is straight with no busted/bent teeth.

Second, check your initial timing with a vacuum gage. You want to have max vacuum at idle which should be 16-18". If you have hard, hot starts as you seem to have now, you need to reduce timing to 14-16"

I cracked about 5 starters on my 455. I kept checking my timing over and over and I would think I had it solved. My motor would roll over fine and always come up on a hard spot. The guy that kept fixing my starters suggested I check to make sure the number 5 and 7 plug wires were crossing over and said I should try shiming the starter closer to the flywheel. I did that and thought I had it fixed until I cracked another starter. Finally I noticed about 5 teeth in the flywheel that had been squished alittle tiny bit. Once I bolted on a new flywheel the thing started like a......like a... Buick!
I was amazed at how very little the teeth were damaged and gave so much trouble for soo long.
