Hoping somebody knows where to find the snap fasteners for the convertible boot cover. Mine is a flangeless machine screw #8-32 and 3/8 long. Can't find any that is the same as original. Why does GM use all the oddball stuff. Frustrating. If anybody knows it would be you Dave! Gary
Many places sell them like AMES in NH. Some I've seen don't have a phillips head but still a decent repro.
That's what I have been finding. AMES has everything exact except they are slotted not Phillips. Gary
Gary, I always used originals but I would check with Hydro Electric in Florida. They are convertible experts. They used to be in Mass. Good move going to Florida for that business. For a last resort try a large boat supply company. That type of snap is used on a lot of sport type boats with removable canvas.
Thanks Dave. I looked online for them but just could not find the exact ones. Either they were #10 machine thread or had a flange. I have most of them but were rusty. I soaked them in iron out and it worked good but are pretty badly pitted. I just like to try and keep everything as original as possible. I will send some pics of the interior next week. I think I did a good job since it has been just 2 seats in it for 20 years +. Criticism welcomed. Always want to learn from the guys on this board. Brian, Not in big hurry. Just need to look better than mine. Thanks, Gary
Are you talking about the piece that covers the top when it's down? Mine has snaps and I always thought from the factory it came where it just hooked onto the stainless trim.
The only "snaps" should be on the interior side panels. The factory boot has plastic tabs that slide up under the chrome trim around the rear of the body opening. I've seen several and owned a couple cars that someone had put snaps into the chrome trim. Does make it work better and keeps it from scratching the paint, but looks like -beep-. Imho....p
Hydro Electric used to be just down the road from my sister's place on 17 in Punta Gorda, Fl. Good people. Hurricane Charlie in 2004 really devastated them. It was odd to drive by where they were in a small industrial park and see nothing but a concrete pad. They relocated temporarily just north a bit until they could rebuild. They lost a lot of parts collected over decades from Fl junkyards.
Hi Gary. The guy I bought my Convert from had the top boot converted to snap fasteners. I went to a canvas shop and they had the snaps that I needed. The snap part on the stainless trim has the #8 brass screws and stainless snaps. I have some extras if you need them. I also have the part that goes on the boot. You have to flare that part so it wont come out. I use a center punch to flare it. Let me know. Jim
