Smoking ban?

Discussion in 'The Bench' started by derek244, Jun 13, 2004.

  1. Trevor, right now smoking is something you have a right to do. The problem is when it infringes on other's rights to be free of inhaling and smelling cig smoke, in a public place. I think my right to breathe (relatively) clean air is a higher priority than anyone's right to blow their smoke my way, intentionally or otherwise. I couldn't care less, if smokers filled their own homes with smoke, that's their choice.

Except that smoking actually hurts everyone around you who takes in the second hand smoke... A gun only hurts what I'm aiming at:Brow: :Brow:

BTW... Guns are banned in public without a permit as well:Smarty:

They did the smoking ban in Toledo and it was the same thing.Business went nuts but are now making more money. Others built special smoking rooms.

They also baned smoking with in 50 feet of any public door way. Smoking out side is still legal but keep your distance from the building.

I have to say i hate smoking. It smells bad, wastes money, is a safety hazard, litters, and most of all deteriarates your body. My father smoked for half of my childhood, but he would do it in the utility room & finally quit

I don't know why people like smoking. :Do No: But it's not my job to judge others. I've met alot of people that i really like alot even though they smoke. I know i'll never smoke, because i've seen the effects of smoking.

That's also a big turnoff for me. It would be like kissing an ashtray until you got used to it.:Dou:

64 Skybird & WUWU20 congratulations on kicking cigaretts.

I've been smoking like a chimney since I was 12 or 13, last 10 years or so I've seen a drastic decrease though.
Smoke only at work which is construction sites or in the truck(mobile office). Smoke while I'm walking the dog, couple times a day.
Haven't smoked at home in about 13 years. No smoking for me at restaurants, public events or social gatherings. Don't smoke in the wife's van, don't even smoke in mine with the children present. Only one coffee shop in town which allows smoking, my favorite haunt @ 6:00AM, weekdays.
The urge gets a trigger when the cell phone starts ringing in the morning. For me, self-employment dictates I have a calm frame of mind while discussing work issues. Get too jittery & loose a deal or mess up part of a project in progress. Light up often but seldom finish it. Smoking less & less every week. Been trying to quit for about a year now, very difficult thing to do. Get grumpy as a bear sometimes.
    Get even grumpier when I hand over $ 10.00 - 10.50 for a pack of 25!

"Smoking" should be a PERSONAL CHOICE?:puzzled: :Dou: :af: :moonu:

SECOND HAND SMOKE is WORSE than if you smoke the cigarette YOURSELF!:af:

So, it's ok for someone to BLOW SMOKE in "YOUR" CHILDREN'S FACES and CAUSE "ASTHMA, HEART PROBLEMS, RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS", while YOU pay the MEDICAL BILLS, right?:TU:

You might want to THINK about what you just said, AGAIN!:TU:

I am TOTALLY against smoking, ALWAYS have been!:af: Your CLOTHES STINK like SMOKE, you can't SEE because the ROOM is FULL of SMOKE and it stings your eyes (to a NON Smoker!).

I don't feel "sorry" for people who smoke, because, you're RIGHT, it IS a "Personal Choice": to WASTE MONEY (I hope they KEEP raising the COST, for "stupidity"), to KILL YOURSELF (with Lung Cancer, and Emphysema, and whatever else YOU DESERVE!:Dou::spank: )!

People COMPLAIN that they "CAN'T QUIT":Dou:
DON'T COMPLAIN! You should have NEVER STARTED!:Smarty::moonu:

The only thing that should be made for Smoking is the TIRES on the BUICK!:Smarty: The neighbors don't like THAT, either!:Do No::ball::af::moonu:

My most proud "anti Smoke" action:

I was driving my NEW '84 Trans Am behind a "BRAND" NEW Thunderbird Supercoupe, when a Cigarette landed on my Windshield Wiper, and was BURNING right through it, as the "Cherry" (cigarette tip) was still HOT (the TBird owner tossed it out his window)!:af:

I DOWNSHIFTED the T/A, FLOORED IT, and PASSED the TBird, and SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES, in front of him, forcing him to pull over!

I got out of my car, grabbed the still hot cigarette, and "put it out" on the HOOD of HIS CAR!:af: He was still "in shock" that I just ran him off the road.:Do No:

    He GOT what HE DESERVED!

Hey guys, no doubt it causes a lot of problems. And some people are INCREDIBLY rude. But I was thinking, does everybody agree with a DRINKING BAN??! Alcohol causes many many deaths on the road every year many of which involve sobre people all the time. Liver and kidney problems. Domestic violence, fights in bars, tons of garbage on the streets. Loud obnoxious behavior. I say we only allow drinking in private places.

And if you have taken yourself or your kids to a place that people have chosen to smoke at it is your right to leave.

How would you come down on this issue: The Legions here also have to enforce a non smoking policy, That's right, people who fought WW2 have been told that they can no longer smoke. The people that fought for our freedom are having theirs taken away. Are there ever any kids in the legion halls? NO. But still they cannot smoke, Now that just isn't right.

Or what we could do is completely and utterly ban pleasure automobiles that don't get say 22 mpg. I'm sure in the long run they do way more damage that occasional second hand smoke. Greenhouse gasses ozone layer, global warming, the whole nine yards.

I agree. You'll never see it though because the loudest whiners get the oil. (or something like that) That would be the anti smokers.

Of course it's dangerous. Nobody knows that better than me. My father smoked Camels from his early teen years on up through his death at age 64. He was a tobacco flavor chemist by trade. One of the best in the world. I grew up in a smoking household and in a smoking extended family.

I don't smoke. Cigarette smoke makes me ill.

I hate inconsiderate smokers who chuck their butts on a nice clean beach or dump them on the roadside. That's just plain retarded. Where the hell do they think the butts are gonna go? To cigarette heaven? No. 50 years from now you'll be able to dig them back up.

...at least Camels with no filter rotted and returned to the earth. (no filter).

Think about the whole filter thing for a moment. What good does it really do? It's a joke really.

Now, hear me out on this, but I'm in favour of removing all taxes... except those on cigarettes.

OK, $2500 / pack is a bit harsh, I agree, but if you look at it overall it's a win-win situation.... because we'd cure cancer.

The government would HAVE to in order to stay in business. :Brow:

Sorry, I heard that at a stand up show about 3 years ago and have been waiting for a smoking discussion to use it in.

In the 9th grade I was walking from my drafting class to my english class. I was passed by an a girl who was an upper classman. She asked me if I had any cigarettes. I said, "Sorry, I don't smoke." She said, "Good, don't ever start."

Best piece of advise I ever got in high school from anyone.

Most of you guys live where it is green all summer. Out here in Cali where we suffer the annual summer drought everything is brown - except along the roadside where everything is black. Nobody EVER throws their still burning butt out the window at 65 mph - right!? Time for a tax on cigarettes in California to pay for fire protection.

I've never been known for being politically correct, so I won't start now. :pp

People who chuck their butts out the windows are slobs. It's littering. I despise littering. I see it here in Maine in epidemic proportions and it's not from the tourists either, it's from the local slobs. It's truly a pathetic sight to see so much roadside litter in such a beautiful place, but people were never taught it was wrong, which is why they do it.

Cigarette butts are just a smaller form of litter. It's just that there are millions and millions of them floating through sewers and rivers and roadsides and beaches and sidewalks and parking lots......

......Hey smokers (not all but many), the world is not your garbage can or your ash tray!!!!
