A couple of weeks ago I told my partner at work that the smoked license plate cover on the back of his Jeep Larado is illegal... " I believe". He said... Oh? ...Hummm!. Well, he tells me today his daughter was pulled over by a cop for having an obstruted cover on the same car. She is 17 years old and the cop gave her a screwdriver and said get it off of there while he waits. Then the cop let her go with no ticket and he said it could have been $150.00. The cops don't like those covers as they can't read the plate and they think that people who have those covers are trying to get away with something. Anyone else here have any experience with this law in your state? Whats the fine? I told him to get that plate cover off of there! :Brow:
In NY it's one of those "depends on the situation" tickets, meaning it's on the books but not always enforced. Technically in NY you can get a ticket for having a license plate frame that covers the words "New York".
Any cover is illegal in Illinois. You used to be able to run clear ones but because they end up fading/hazing they are now illegal as well. Bill
license plate covers They are illegal in every state I have been an officer in. But most officers that I know will not write a cite for the clear ones. I only worried about those that restricted my view of the numbers and letters and state of origin, expiration date ect.
Licence Plate Covers I had smoke grey ones on the Riv and was informed that any type of cover is not allowed in the Province of Ontario - clear or coloured. Apparently glare from the covers can cause problems for photo law enforcement technics. I replaced them with clear covers. o No: :TU:
Any kind of smoked cover over a license plate interfers with scanning equipment and also the officers visual inspection as a car passes by. If you look at some of the covers that are offered, most license plates cannot be read if they were looked on an angle. In most cases,it looks like there isn't a plate at all. I would say it is illegal.
Wow you learn something new every day. I have had a smoked plate cover ever since I started to drive. I have never had any hassles with it. Lets hope it stays that way. Erik
Guy here at work got tagged for having a license plate frame that covered the bottom half of his yearly renewal stickers. Here in MN our renewal stickers go on the bottom of the plates, and many frames have the cut outs for those stickers at the top. I would also bet all those headlight and tail light covers aren't cool with the law either.
They are illegal in Virginia. My sister in law got stopped two days in a row by the same cop on the same road on her way to work. She learned the hard way. He let her go the first time and told her to have it removed. The next day he ticketed her. That night it was removed. Dave
as far as i know, in ontario, any licence plate cover that obstructs the plain view of the licence plate #s or the expiry date tag, is illegal, and u would be ticketed. i have clear plexiglas covers on all three of my vehicles and have never stopped by police. here is something else. u cannot use neon lights to light up your licence plate nor to light up the undercarriage of any vehicle.
When I was in college in Michigan in 1973 I got pulled over for having a snow covered rear window. The cop gave me scraper and told me to clean it off. Being the SA I was at that time and knowing that the "pimp look" that had a diamond shape cut into a padded back window was a normal thing, I thought I would be cute and I only cleaned a diamond shape from the snow. The officer was not amused, called me a SA and told me to clean the whole thing or get a summons. I did... but argued that I did not understand the difference. He pointed to his badge and said, "Here is the difference". Now that I am an adult I think he was the real SA.
I have been pulled over for the clear and smoked ones. The officer that pulled me for the clear one said it gives a glare to the plate and obstructs someone from reading it. I never was written a ticket, but was asked to remove them and even given a screwdriver to remove the smoked one. It was in a rain storm and the officer loved watching me take it off and get wet!
I got a ticket for having no front license plate on my Vette - it was under the bra and when I tried to explain that and show it to the local, he said "wasn't there when I pulled you over so it don't exist and don't matter anyways".
lic plt cvrs I new about the license covers but did you guys know fog/driving lights are also illegal in all fifty states when turned on with oncoming traffic. This is a federal law. You must turn them off just like your high beams when an oncoming car is approaching. I was stopped and warned by a DOT officer one day when it was verrrrrry foggy in my Peterbuilt with the lamps on in my big chrome bumper. Mikey
arn't they standard on many vehicles? i know my friends 240 sx came with driving lights stock from the factory, and a most second tier (not base model) GM vehicles come with fog lamps currently o No: -nate in Wisconsin, the frosted or colored covers are illegal but they don't enforce it much in milwaukee. also aftermarket window tint too dark or on the drivers windows at all is illegal. and under car lights and lighting in the front other than white or yellow/amber is illegal, and any color in the rear other than red or amber is illegal and lighting on the sides other than amber or red is also illegal.
In Pa, the driving lights are supposed to be hooked to the high beams so that when the lights are dimmed, they are off. Also, tinted license plate covers as well as taillight and headlight covers are a no-no. Tint on side windows must be so light,or you get busted as well...Just ask Buick Trainee...
Standard yes, but every car I've been in had a switch to manually turn them off. Any cover over your plate is illegal, smoked headlight covers are only illegal at night (in the states that I lived in)... but smoked tail light covers were very illegal and pulled over alot. I was once pulled over in MI while driving with my front windows down, cop made me roll them up to make sure they wern't tinted illegally (rest of the wagon was limo tinted), she used the BS line "the reason I pulled you over is because I didn't see you with your seatbelt on"....lol. Of course they don't see it half the time, it's the same color as the interior p
