Im new and have a question... First let me explain the situation-- 1986 Regal + '72-'75 short block 455 casting 1241735. Whats the best STREET LEGAL factory (post '72) OR aftermarket head? Ive read '70-'71 stage 1 heads and other earlier model 455 heads flow better but can these be converted to a SMOG (A.I.R.?) system? Or is it neccessary for later model SMOG heads to be used to pass the test? There arent many aftermarket heads for BBBs, so are TA Performance heads legal? Any particular model-Stage 1, Stage 2? Or can these be converted to SMOG too? Who else makes Buick 455 heads? I didnt want to call just TA yet so Im on here asking.

    Thanks in advance,

    -Chase

You can put earlier heads on later blocks, just not the reverse. I have 70 heads on my 76 block. As far as converting to smog, I don't think its possible. Lots of guys have non smog engines that pass emissions. TA is the only aftermarket heads out there, but they kick a$$ if you can afford them.

Anybody know Texas laws? I cant afford to build a motor I cant even drive legally. Remember cars made after 1972 changed, the laws became more strict, so most people on here dont have to even worry about it-but I will in a 1986 model car. I dont think a '71/'72 head even on a freshly rebuilt motor would pass 72-later SMOG I think I need to call TA

You can always build your EGR heads to perform....

I also will bet my car burns as clean as some of the 80's cars....and it's a 71:Brow:

It's all in how well it's tuned - and tuned UP. All ignition and fuel parts work well - and work well together. I think you can make a pretty mean combo with a good set of EGR heads.

Yep, I never gave much thought to it being a smog car to begin with and the laws that apply. I'm sure there's someone lurking around here that can give you some good advice though.
