I noticed yesterday morning that it was not working at all.. wouldn't load.., so I figured let it go a bit, and see if it comes back..often does.. Larry H texted me later on it was still not working, so I came right in from the shop to the office here, and created another trouble ticket at our host.. That ticket was answered in 40 minutes, and when I checked back here around noon, it was lighting quick. Had a long day and fell asleep on the couch after dinner, so I didn't look at it last night. But was on several times yesterday afternoon, and it was working better than it had in quite some time. So I was surprised to see this when I logged on this morning. BTW.. I had to delete the first thread.. when I tried to reply to it, we got a program error.. weird, only that thread.. so I deleted it so no one else could get that error. In regard to a Denial of Service attack, I did get this note when they did the reboot, to clear the RAM.. Hello, Your server has been updated and rebooted. All the RAM is cleared. We also noticed that there was a lot of attempts on your ssh ports so we have blocked that and only allowing certain IP addresses from our end to connect to it. If you need ssh access please give us an IP to white list for you. Thank You, Mario Sr. Support Team So, maybe someone is trying to attack us, I will have them look further into it if we have issues today. Sorry for the inconvenience guys. JW
As a former firewall/load balancer/network security engineer, they really shouldn't allow ANY unused ports to access the server from external. If you are only using HTTPS to login to the server, that's all they should allow. If you and a select few are the only ones managing it via anything else, like SSH or FTP, they should, as they mentioned, whitelist your IPs. Also, most service providers can monitor for attacks. They might charge for it, but it is usually an offered service. You might consider turning it on for a short period of time or see if they will trial it for you to verify its effectiveness. Most attacks are DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) and are generated by millions of hacked home computers/devices from around the world. This makes them impossible to block with simple blacklists and requires more intelligent systems to keep them at bay. When I was still in the game, most were controlled by hackers from China and Russia, no surprise. It's a game of cat and mouse.
...like I said in part 1, it's not directed at V8. For several weeks, almost every site I access via Google and thru my tabs, especially Amazon, have the issue. I'm surprised there hasn't been more chatter about it. Someone's messing with internet...
Lol. I get server maint/upgrades, but for weeks? Not my business per se & not me that has to handle the migration, but maybe time for new hosting.
Lol. Maybe Scott White IS Chesapeake Chris. If nothing else, Chris would fit in perfectly on Scott's page.
Frustrating.. sometimes fast, other times tear your hair out slow. I have them working on it again.. Moving to another host starts a whole 'nuther kind of nitemare.. been there, done that.. These large database VBS services get cranky when you start fooling with them.. so let's see if the boys at the hosting company can earn their money and get it fixed for us, before we go all hog wild here. Hang in there guys.. doing what I can. JW
Weird as all day today it's been hit or miss for me. Sometimes it times out and have to come back later.
No, this is not the case. You may have issues with your system or provider, but it is NOT a widespread issue. Also, as a host to several low volume websites and email services, any system you expose to the internet at large is IMMEDIATELY and constantly under attack. This is normal now, So as a host you need to know how to block/deflect/disable the bulk of these attacks. If a single individual, was attacking, her IP address should be readily detectable. If this is a high level attack (russians/chinese, etc,) they have a botnet of compromised hosts to attack from. In either case the hosting outfit should know what is causing this IF it's traffic related. If it's software related (ie the V8Buick board software has a bug) they can only restart it and see if that helps, which is what it sounds like they did yesterday...
