Slack in the drivetrain

My GS has what seems to be some excessive slack in the drivetrain when I put it in gear (It's an auto). It's almost like the driveshaft turns a slight amount (maybe a 1/16th of a revolution), or so, before it "grabs" (for lack of a better term). It doesn't seem to have any issues when it's being driven.

Could this be a bad u-joint, or should I be looking more at the transmission, or something else?

Sounds like the rear end might be the liekly culprit. Has this just started, or gotten progressively worse over time?
Any howl from the rear end, particularly when coasting?

I agree with Nick. Your probably experiencing some backlash from the driveline. More than likely the rear. Have you gotten under the car yet? Check the easy stuff first, like the u joints. You might get lucky and find a bad u joint.
