    Hello,

If the vin on a 65 skylark starts out with 444 is this just a
straight v8 car? I am looking at one that starts with 444, but
it is a GS? I thought all the 64/65 skylark GS's started with 446?
Am i missing something? Thanks for the help.

444 is a 65 GS, there is no 446 in 65. Starting in 66, 446 is the GS

    VIN

I would think the 65 and 66 vin numbers would be the same as a skylark as these were skylarks with the Gran sport option, when they changed the name from Gran
sport to GS in 67 it came with its own vin id,in 73 it was switched back to an option, hence the 73 and up cars once again became GRAN SPORTS,chevy kinda did the same thing when they went from super sport to SS

That's what I thought. This web site says the 65 gs are 446?

The information I quoted is straight from Steven Dove's book "Guide to Buick GS 65-75" However accurate that is. It doesn't list a 446 in 65, just 66 and up. Don't have any info for 64.

In 1965, the GS was only an option package on the Skylark....the VIN does not differentiate between a Skylark, and a Skylark GS...
If you have the Protecto-Plate, it would show the LR engine code for the '400'/401 engine. And if the original engine is in the car, the last 6 digits should match the VIN. Without those items (or a build sheet), you just have to look for the GS-specific items: Boxed frame, battery on left side, bigger sway bar, and bigger front wheel cylinders, etc...

In 1966, the Skylark GS became a separate model, with it's unique VIN....

    Walt,
You are absolutely right:TU: I took another look at the Dove book, and it has some contradictory info. This is page 84, 65 GS Vin interpretation. It shows the series 44 as a GS. But if you look at the new car order form I'll post next, it shows that 444 only guarantees it is a Skylark V8
