I believe this wheel to be an OEM Corvette wheel. Very similar to the Buick wheel. See link below for the description of a Corvette N34 steering wheel. Same fit as the Buick Rally wheel. http://www.camaros.org/swheel.shtml#67 Overall both items in good condition. The steering wheel has a open crack at the bottom center, and a crack opposite of the bottom one at 12:00. There is no separation, but the crack is all the way around. It also has a few scrapes to the finish as well as a few nicks. I believe it to be original finish. I would suspect a buyer would refinish it, but it is presentable for a 44 year old part IMO. The horn button has one crack that extends from the bottom of the K outward. Both $220.00 shipped in the lower 48. Thanks, Patrick
What size is it and what is the depth on it? Is it a walnut style? <o> </o> <o> </o> Both $220.00 shipped in the lower 48<o></o>
It is a 16" wheel with a depth of 4", and I believe it to be the walnut color. Both items $220.00 shipped in lower 48. Patrick
I believe it's from 67 & 68 Corvette, but also was used in other Chevy's of those years as optional wheels. Very similar to Buick's 68 wood wheel. The spokes are a 2-piece design requiring a correct 68 hub to fit.
Mark, You don't need a special hub. A Buick 68 rally steering wheel hub will work, after all it is fundamentally the same wheel. I’m certain others will work as well. Patrick
Correct, it isn't a "Corvette" hub that is required. Buick supplied the correct hub for the Buick application. It has a notched mounting surface to accommodate the 2-piece spoke design. I don't know if the 'vette and Buick steering shafts were the same, so the 'vette hub may not be the same. This is a nice wheel, I've seen it personally. They seem to sell for pretty good money on Ebay.
Is the chevy version different than the Buick version? And is the corvette version unique? I always wondered if the GM part numbers were the same. Olds also offered the same type of wheel (3 spoke) for the '68 442. Sorry to hi-jack.... Original versions of this wheel are very hard to find in good condition as we all know.
Mike, Im certainly no expert, but I believe it is the same as the Buick wheel. Except a slight color difference, and the Buick wheel may have a smother grip finish. The spokes and the way they are arranged/attached are the same, as well as the size of the wheel. Some of the other similar GM wheels have a one piece spoke design, while the N34 (Corvette) and the Buick wheel have the two piece design. Patrick
I'm also not an expert, but I have swapped more than a few steering wheels around GM stuff and I have never seen a different size shaft on these old cars. Maybe someone else that knows will set us straight, but I think they are the same at least until air bags came along. Mike
I think the '68 Buick A-Body hub for the sport wheel is unique - at least within Buick. Im not sure across divisions
Patrick, i didnt mean to mis inform, if i did chevy wood wheels to 67 or 68 have a flat hub mounting surface some time in 68 the wheel has the spokes stacked, 2 pieces, and that hub is notched..i have never seen an original 68 bucik hub so i mis spoke, being it was flat at the hub, i was pretty sure it was vettte..sorry
Mark, No problem...no one could possibly know all the facts. If they claim to...watch out. This steering wheel is a 2 piece design, and requires the notched hub, just like the original Buick 16" simulated rallye wheel and the N34 Corvette. Patrick
The 68 and 69 hubs have different diameters for the shaft. Someone posted pictures here a year or 2 ago when I was converting my 68 back to a correct 68 wood wheel, from the Grant that was on it when I bought it. The Buick simulated wood wheels seem to be totally smooth with no grain you can feel. The others I've had my hands on have a physical grain to them that you can see and feel, though they are relatively smooth. But heck, for all I know both styles may have been used on 68 Buicks too. Mike's original wheel is totally smooth with what I'd describe as a "flowing" design to the wood grain. Same as an OEM wheel I used to own, and wish I still had.
The 68 hub is smaller and taller. However, I went back and re-read some old posts, and Mike T. has commented that he was able to use a 69+ hub on his 68 while searching for a correct 68 hub, so apparently the shaft diameters ARE the same. The 69 hub left a big gap though when installed.
This is correct, I used a 69 hub( no notch) with a 71 rallye wheel for a while on my 68 GS and it did leave a gap where the hub meets the steering wheel. The correct 68 hub does not leave this gap. ---------- Post added at 09:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:59 PM ---------- TTT for the steering wheel and hub that are for sale in this thread. Thread has kind of been taken over by the wheel debate:laugh:
