Now, I know alot of you guys have stock stereos and that cool. But, I want to see what you other guys have done to update the sounds in your ride. I will be doing a couple of things here soon. Gotta love the V8 Buick sound, but some music is nice too! Post pictures and info when you can! :)

Brad, thanks. I actually used that thread a while back to make my face plate, so that's taken care of. I am decently handy when it comes to stereo/amp installs. I was just wondering if there is some people on here that have done anything else unusual. The more info/pics posted, the better off we all are! :)

Well here is a small update I did when i was bored a few years ago.....it was an idea from seeing the ones for sale, turned out much cheaper and really picked up the sound quality...

On my ragtop, I keep looking at that huge unused area inside the rear seat support, it would sure be cool to mount a bass box in there and pipe the sound forward somehow (kinda like how some portable blasters use the subwoofer in the back and have a tube going forward to project the bass out a small hole beside the front speakers)....

I am open to suggestions for a hidden system in my ragtop, not much for options I guess....currently looking at a couple boxes on the floor same color as carpet but that won't work too well if I have rear seat passengers....

  8. i used the mounting bracket as a template cetered it and cut out a hole, but used a thin piece of plastic to cover the old face: used basically the same method that was shown in the above link

I did my trunk this past spring, and added a nice little 12" subwoofer to help out the sound in the convertible..

Sound system over a flowmaster 455?

I think these are all good soloutions for a car that is stock, or mildly modfied. My problem is I have headers dumping into 3in tubing into flowmaster delta flow 40's, then cutting out before the rear wheels. Its a bit loud. I am just beginning this part of my project, but I have built some heavy duty sound systems before in confined spaces, so I dont think it will be that bad.

You have all laid out the main downsides...

    1) no speakers in the doors....dont try it unless you dont need to roll down your windows

    2) 4 x 10 speaker driven by an 800 watt amp......I dont think so

    3) 6 x 9 in the back.....depending on your taste this may work. Many companies make damn good 6 x 9's. ( Rockford Fosgate or Infinity Reference has worked well for me in the past)

I use planet audio amps. They are relativly cheap, and work very well. For all the cars I build for myself I go with 6in speakers ( minimum ) up front and 12's in the back with a 400 watt x 4 channel amp. I think because of the rumble my GS has, Im gonna need to step it up here.

    Here's my plan....

    2 - 12's in the rear
    500 watt x 4 amp
    2 - 6's or 10's up front

Here's how I plan to do it......

Amp in the trunk....thats an easy one

12's in the back will be mounted in the deck panel. Im like you guys that I dont like to cut the car. So I plan to get some steel and make some brackets to mount the 12's about 4-6 in below the deck surface, and make a plate out of wood that seperates the lower part of the trunk ( the recessed part of the floor) from the top part. The top part wil act as its own speaker box.

The front is tricky, and if you get lazy, there is a guy in e-bay that sells GM A body kickpanels with forms molded in that hold 6 in speakers. They come with speakers, but they suck, I recomend buying them without the speakers and getting something quality. If you want something more than that, a few years ago I put a system in a custom car, and we mounted 2 downward firing 10's. Its the same situation where you have to shield the magnets and make brackets to hold them. I think it would work in a GS, but havent looked too closely at it yet.

The difference between 10's and 6's isnt all that much if you use quality speakers and dont listen to really base driven music. If your crankin some stevie ray vaughn, you should be ok, but if your in to DMX or that style of music, you may find the 6's are inadequate.

Geez, Adam! :eek2: Do you have "dinner parties" in your Trunk? I mean, That trunk is so clean, you could EAT off of it! :Smarty: And there's ROOM enough for at least 4 people in there! :pp

Seriously, THAT IS AWESOME, the way you "covered" the Speaker Box to match the Spare Tire, too! Very Clever, and Very NEAT! :TU:

As far as a Hidden Stereo in the 8 Track Player, that sounds like something I would do, myself! :bglasses:

I'm still building my Stereo System, so I don't have any pictures, yet. :Do No:

Nice touch Adam. You are always giving me ideas for my rag top (when the damn snow melts, that is!). What about the radio? The stock am/fm/8 track in mine is almost dead and I don't want to hack up the stock dash. Did you come up with a good trick to mount/hide a current radio?

Glenn I wish I could've retained my stock radio, but when I bought the car, it was already cut up. So I just replaced it with a nice Sony CD player.

I just grabbed a shovel, flash light and a tape measure... Wow.. the interior light came on..I guess the battery was better than I thought. Anyways... The ashtray measures just shy of 10" and I know where a '73 Riv parts car is with the same dash. I'm thinking about grabbing the donor ashtray and "modifying" it to be a cover plate to hide a radio/cd/mp3 that I stuff into the ashtray compartment. Sounds good (no pun intended) in theory but I have to see what the depth is of a new deck. With some luck I can cram in a new deck and still retain the stock look. Damn you snow... melt!
