The generator is going out on my '60 LeSabre and I don't know if I should rebuild it or replace it with an alternator. What are the differences in output and reliability?

If originality is not a concern a 10SI or 12SI (internally regulated) alternator would be a great alternative for the generator. The output varies depending on the alternator you choose. Face it we would still be using generators if alternators were not better.

The main thing is output at lower RPMs, and availability of replacement parts. Either the 10SI or 12SI are inexpensive and easy to get anywhere.

With respect to your question, an alternator is more reliable due to its construction. For the same reason, it is more able to create a higher charging current. The reason is because the rectifiers in the alternator charge the battery from both posts, not just the positive post. The result is that, with no switching necessary, less heat is created, more current is available, and less losses result from trying to switch this current mechanically, as is done with a generator regulator. The alternator is not only more reliable, but capable of current ratings exceeding 150 amps. Ray

ok, that leads me to my second question. Does anyone have an alternator braket for a 364 nailhead with a/c?

Now if you do switch from a generator to a Altenator what else do you have to do? Will have too use a larger wires anywhere ?,or will the fuse box be affected in anyway:confused: .......I would like to up date my 65 401......but I am not sure on how to go about it:Do No:
I am sure some has done a thread on this but I can't find it.
