Hi all, Should a 2 ton engine hoist be able to lift a 455 with a TH400 (short tail) attached ??? Thanks, Harry
Yes, even if it is boomed out it willbe OK as long as you have the proper hardware. I like to use a carb plate myself.
Thanks, Just asking because I brought my 455 and Th400 home today, and the right front lower leg of the hoist I rented collapsed :jd: while unloading it from my friends pickup, engine/trans hit the ground, almost took the fender of my daily driver Firebird with it, bent the oil pan, and crushed the oil filter on the 455 :af: . I don't know if the timing cover got damaged yet, and I hope the pan can be salvaged. I thought the lower legs looked 'bowed' on the lift when I got it home, should've trusted my instincts..........especially after I found the right rear wheel was binding up... Thanks again, wanted to have my 'ducks in a row' before I go to the rental place and start yelling  . Harry
I just used an old 3/4 ton engine lift to hoist a 455/400 from my Dakota's bed. Seperated the eng./trans. and put on a stand with no problems. You've got every right to complain to them about their faulty equipment. I would. :blast:
Best check that the oil pickup wasn't damaged. Sounds like a faulty lift, I've pulled mine out with the 1 ton setting using an engine leveller.
I'll need to check on the brand, I believe that 2-ton may be an advertising name. But in any case it should not have collapesed like that..... Thanks, Harry
the buick big block weighs ~650lbs by itself, add another ~200lbs for the th400 and you're still under 1000 ... and this collapsed a lift rated at 4000lb? sounds like major liability issues for the rental company to me... :af: the previous renter may or may not have abused the lift but it's the rental companies responsibility to inspect it and make sure that it's in proper working order before the rent it out again. the only problem is that you probably signed off on the condition of the lift when you rented it....
I can't find a brand on the hoist, but the boom has a clevis pin that locks into different holes for different lengths, the shortest, where the boom is slid all the way in says '2-tons' next to it. This is where I had it set. Here's a few pics. Thanks, Harry
Looks like it just collapsed from fatigue. Whereas people than own hoists might use it to pull a motor once, maybe twice a year, the rental hoist probably lifted a motor about every weekend. I would just stay calm and collected and ask to sit down and have a dialouge with the store manager- not the sales guy behind the counter.
I bet you anything that it was bent / kinked previously and straightened back out. I cant see how that would happen any other way.
