I need some advice and help. I would like to remove my shifter handle from my 72 GS ( 4 spd Hurst - stock set up) and was wondering how to do that withought taking the entire shifter assy out. Can the handle be removed alone? It needs rechroming . Thanks, Steve

Use Scott's method with pentrating oil. I use the feeler gauge with an angle like you use to adjust valves.

Thanks very much. I'll try that with some penetrating oil. I appreciate the help. I assume reinstall is a simple matter of press to fit until it clicks in place? Thanks, Steve

Steve I have a 72 GS four speed, the best tool to use is a 1/2" wide metal putty knife. Just insert it on the drivers side and tap it down with a small hammer while pulling on the shifter. It will pop right out.
I tried the feeler gauge and after bending ruining two of them I used the putty knife.
    Good luck!
