I am getting closer to having all my gauges hooked up and the tach too.I have a question where to hook the wires for the Autometer shiftlite to.I am running an MSD 6AL ignition with a 2 step and a Autometer tach. The wire from the tach goes into the tach output but does the wire from the shiftlite go there also?I have never used a shiftlite before and the directions they give you are very vague. Can anyone help me sort this out?

    CIT Poweraddict, help me

The wire from the shiftlite go where the tachwire go.
The shiftlite needs the same signals as the tach to work

    Thanks Peter,
I thought that was where it would go.I think I'll solder the wires from the tach and shiftlite together then plug it in.

    Pat,
I believe that you must order an MSD RPM activated switch as well as the plug in modules for it. The shift light is just a light that needs to be activated by something. The RPM activated switch (part#8950), has a power lead, a ground, a white wire that goes to your MSD box tach output, and a yellow and gray wire. The yellow wire closes to ground, the gray wire opens an already grounded circuit. Use the yellow wire. Wire the RPM activated switches 12 volt(red), ground (black), and tach wire (white). Wire the shift lite to a 12 volt source, and the shift light ground to the yellow wire. If you want your shift light to come on at say 5500 RPM, you plug the appropriate module into the RPM activated switch. When the Switch reads 5500 RPM at the box, the yellow wire closes to ground lighting the light. Hope that makes sense.

Believe it or not Larry it did make sense. I'll send for one of those RPM activated switches as soon as I am ready. Thanks for the assistance.Oh by the way,I am getting ready to fire the GS this weekend with the Stinger distributor in it.Thanks for the help there too.

    Pat,
If the above post is unclear, just go to the MSD website, www.msdignition.com and click on downloads, then instructions, then scroll down to 8950- RPM activated switch. You need Adobe acrobat to view the instructions. There is a wiring diagram for a shift light. Good luck

That's great Pat, I hope you get the polarity right the first time, I didn't:Dou: If the polarity is wrong, the timing will be advanced, and the car will be hard to crank and start. Just reverse the polarity, and you should be fine. Also if you want to vary the RPM that the light lites at, you can order a module selector. It's a switch with 12 modules built in. It plugs into the RPM actvated switch, and instead of changing modules, you flip a switch to the RPM you need. I have one controlling my high speed retard, part # 8670 3000-5200 in 200 RPM increments. Hope that helps.

Both MSD and Autometer make a shift lite with a RPM chip socket built right in. Just put the RPM chip you want and the shift lite to comes on at that RPM. Plugs right in with your tach on the 6AL. Much cheaper that adding an external RPM switch. :TU:

    Autometer #5640
    OR
    MSD 8952

    Both cost between $60.00 & $70.00
