Guys im looking into buying a series 3 posi off another board member and i'd like some info. Its going into my mainly stock 1971 buick skylark with the 8.5 10 bolt and factory option 3.08 gears. I would really like to buy this posi but first i want to know if it will work for me. I dont plan on running slicks or more than 300hp out of the buick 350. Im also planning on running 3.42 gears. How well will this posi work for me? I just need something that will do its job when i need it. Its hardly going to be used thanks to the high gas prices.Just a saturday night car. Any info would be great.

Also, since the rear already has 308 gears, would i have to use a spacer for the 3.42 gears?

    Jon

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

    Will work fine.

You state high gas prices but want a 3.42 from 3.08???
You will just drop your gas mileage 10%

Stick with 3.08 for all around use....street and interstate

I just want it to have a little more kick to it. later on i'll look into a 200r4 and see how much that would cost to get it behind the motor.

I changed my original 3.42 in my 71 Stage-1 to a 3.08 and noticed very little difference in power. Car is still very quick and much better on the highway. Car also downshifts at a higher RPM for lots of fun. Don't waste your money on a 3.42. Consider rebuilding you rear as is and if you want to spend some cash consider adding a nice Eaton Posi Carrier they work great.
