Other than the you have to use the spacer with a 2 series, are they any real differences between a 2 or 3 series? Is one stronger than the other? I have been looking for a posi unit to purchase and install in my 3.08 one legger, but some of these prices for used units are crazy. Thanks, Scott
Scott Go to this site http://www.buickperformance.com/page1.htm there's a great article on how to find posi units in the junk yards and how to remove them. I found two last year in about six trips. I'm just the opposite of you I've got the posi and looking for the rearend. Dave Berry
Thanks Dave! I have read the article before and we seem to be dried up around me. I have been looking at Ebay. Scott
Little price comparison to rebuild "S" spring 8.5 posi: unknown cond used #9 posi carrier from e-Bay, lets say $85....$105 shipped. Side clutch shims are discoed from GM, with wear on side gears & spiders, need to be able to shim up the clutchs tight, for posi to work the best... make my own shims, something for the effort...........................$45 New box of GM clutchs.........................................................$85 (if one can get them this cheap) So far, we're at $235...& still no ring gear spacer & hardened washers Summit 8.5 ring gear spacer & pkg of Mr Gasket SBC head bolt washers (need 10 out of the pack)........$45 So far am at $280, far from the original $85 selling price. Also need to consider, did not buy a 300 lb "S" spring or figure any $ for loctite needed when tightening ring gear spacer bolts. The new Eaton 8.5's are starting to look really attractive... Moral... Hunting & hunting for used "S" spring 8.5 posis is all fun & good, but they better be cheap, esp if high ratio units. Just a little something from rebuilding hundreds of these posi carriers. 90% of em, used, need new clutchs & shimmed up tight for high performance use. By the mid 90's, I was gutting prob 2 out 3 of the high ratio 8.5 "S" spring posis I came across in Pick-n-Pulls, crusher yards, etc, just for good posi side gears & occasional good clutchs. Some may think that is/was crazy, but one new posi side gear would run $90 at the dealer & occasionally, side gears were spalled in low ratio carriers I had setting on the bench. Object at the time was to source & rebuild as many low ratio posi carriers as possible, use #9 carriers with spacers only, when cars was a putt-a-round cruiser. Still holds true today, but buy many more new posi carriers. Gotta run. Roger
