BigBlock68 Love that old car smell.

Coming out of a cruise tonight me and my buddy were cruising along when a newer GTO pulls along side us and gasses it like he wants to run. I obliged by getting on it and blowing by him. He gave it some more gas but couldn't keep up and passed me at a red light (his lane was clear and I was back a few cars in mine). Then a couple of guys pulled up in a new Charger and questioned me about the car, probably wondering how the hell I just out accelerated a GTO. Their eyes got real big when I said 440 ft lbs of torque.
Not much of a story, but this sections been pretty dead lately.

Why is it that all the pre-1972 car owners are still using the old gross ratings ? Those blokes were in a new Charger, so you should play it fair and use the nowadays lower ratings.....

I'm sure that if the SAE HP ratings were higher compared to the gross HP ratings, you all would know about this [IMG]

I would have told them "I don't know. I just got this car out of a garage of an old lady who couldn't drive it anymore." :)

I still can't believe GM called them things GTO......they look like a grand am with rear wheel drive to me. No wonder not too many old schoolers own one! :Dou:

These guys are old school, take what Detroit offers and try to be the fastest in thier neighborhood:
Procharged 540 '69 Camaro grocery getter, 828rwhp running on 7 cylinders with pump gas, dyno sheet attached.
406 Hilborn EFI Cobra that runs 11.1 with street tires.
    900hp twin turbo LT1 Camaro.
    Check out the latest project...
2005 GTO, stock 400hp LS2. Now with a 402 stroker with twin turbo. I think that can be called a GTO. 440ft-lbs may not be enough for the next GTO you see

I do know about this but that's how my car's rated and that's what I go by since I haven't dynoed it. And they just revamped those ratings (remember the '06 Z06 getting a bump from 500 hp to 505? Most exotics power ratings went down). Maybe we should have all pre '06 cars go by their new ratings too if my car gets held to that standard?

And yes those GTO's are butt ugly.

    NJBuickRacer I'd rather be racing...

My '04 GTO auto went 13.59@101.88 with a 1.98 60' bone stock, stock tires, 800 miles on the clock and a temp tag in the window. You beat the driver, not the car. If it was an '05 up they run low low 13s bone stock with a competent driver.

I know what new goats can do. I'm sure if we had some room to really run I woulda gotten run down and smoked.

what do you propose as an alternative? we have NO OTHER factory numbers available for these engines. and current performance of an engine originally manufactured ~35 years ago is practically meaningless in relation to the original numbers anyway.

i'm sure if you're willing to pay for the dyno time, we'd all be willing to go out and have our cars spec'ed. :spank:
