Okay guys, quick question. I have the chance to grab a 75 Camaro rear end with a 3.08 posi for next to nothing. Now, I know that my rear end is fine, and plenty strong, but I definitely wouldn't mind 2 wheel peels.... How much extra work would be involved in the swap? Would the Camaro rear end need a lot of modification? Or would the swap be fairly straight forward? I've been digging for as many pictures as I can to compare the 2, but nothing gives me any good ideas.
Wont work without more investment than it would take to modify your stock rear end.Theres posi carriers out there that fit your car.
Well you just need to remove the control arm perches and install them onto the 8.5 rear. We have done this with a dana 60 for a customer and he wanted the original 12" brakes to be used also. We made custom MOSER 35 spline Most important thing is ANGLES correct - Have to measure a lot and use angle finders etc. Here are some pictures. Jim
So, I found a posi center section from a 64 Catalina locally. Any ideas if this would work? It looks like the right part from the ad, and says it's a 3.23 (?) if I recall right. For the price, I would much rather go this route. I looked at my build sheet today, and it says I have a PE code rear. Which is all I really know about it at this point. Thanks guys!
I recall 9 3/8" rears did not BOP interchangeable until after the 1970 model year. For 70 and earlier, they were Buick only. I think the PE rear you have may also be a 3.23. Have someone else double check this information.
So take a look at this.... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/aub-5420114/applications http://autoplicity.com/1948398-aubu...bZxkG4ZQUxSKsMNKsUASjgfcvfQrxE8v0waAvrq8P8HAQ Digging through the applications, it references both the 64 Catalina, and a base 65 Rivi. So this makes me think that the Catalina center section should swap. Thoughts?
Your Riviera rear is not an 8.2 10 bolt. I always thought the early Riviera's had the 9.375 rear. No aftermarket support.
Okay...what about this then? http://www.ratechmfg.com/gmappchrt60s.htm Showing both the 64 Catalina and the 65 Rivi being 9.375 rear ends. Not trying to ask dum-dum questions. Axles are just one of the things I don't know "enough" about.
Even Olds and Pontiac from the late 50s to the early 60s used their own 9.3 inch rear gears for their bigger cars with big engines. Summit and the others are likely not familiar with these orphaned rears. They are dealing with rears for lighter A body's which did used 8.2 inch rears. Your Riv is an E body which did use the Buick 9.3 inch rear. Contact JD Race for a used unit that will fit. http://www.jdrace.com/diff_id/pontiacDropout.htm
Prior to 1971 Buick used a different 9.3 relative to Pontiac/Olds. Starting in the 71 model year, they used the same 9.3.
Gaaahhh! Oh well. I'll come across something I suppose. It was just a really good deal for a good center section. Was hoping the answers would be "Get it!!" I'll find one...
The Pontiac & Olds are 9.250" (9 1/4") NOT 9.3. The Buick is 9.375" (9 & 3/8ths) Again NOT 9.3 The 9 1/4" will NOT fit. After doing ALL this messing around it would be MUCH less costly to find the proper Posi unit for the 3.23 gears & back. A Posi carrier for 3.42 & up are a diff. unit. Tom T.
Buick riv can only use 63 64 65 third member drop out center sections from Electra, Invicta, Wildcat, and of course Riv... That is it... Jim
