HEllo I have a 1969 buick riviera. I have modded the engine with headers, intake, carb, and cam. The real problem is that the factory electric fuel pump wont supply enough fuel. I tried the "performance" pump on Yardleys site wich works great. But I have now gone through two of them I dont know why I use all the filters and the filter on the pump looks clean. The question is if I can just disconect the pump and put in a factory stage1 machanical pump without a problem.

any help is greatly appreciated, will

Hi Riv. Please tell us your name... :beer

Been through 2 of those Ford Ranger pumps??? Huh.

I burned one and thought it was only because I didn't have a sock on it...

Yes, you can disconnect the electric pump and draw right through it with the mechanical pump with no bottleneck back in the tank.

The only problem I saw with that idea is that our fuel line runs up the passenger side of the car. You'll need to somehow run a line from the bottom of the rear part of the passenger side inner fender, and all the way around to the other side of the timing cover to where the pump mounts. Braided line would work, but is cumbersome. Bending a line would be nice too, but in both cases how do you secure it to the engine?

Just rebuilding my positive battery cable required fabbing up little mounting brackets to attach to the front of the oil pan where the factory cable mounted. We're strapped for accessable places to run a line.

But it CAN be done if you plan it all out first and are ready to do a few attempts with trial and error.

I mounted an electric Carter pump to the inner part of the frame where it goes over the rear. It is in the only spot I could find that didn't interfere with the suspension or exhaust pipe. Tight to be sure. I should take a pic of it while I have her up on jackstands with the exhaust off...

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

My name is willy I am in Vallejo, California about 45 mile away from San Fransisco. Yeah I Have gone through two of those pumps I do drive the car alot at least 300 mile a weak but this last time it went out was a real bumer I had just put some 455 ported heads on and I noticed the fuel pump wasnt as loud as normal and only a little fuel got to the filter. the car had sat for a good three months. I think the impellar was spinning on its shaft. The car would starup and die over and over. I pulled the line and checked it for clogs even blew air throught it.

I think I will go for the easy fix this weekend. In March I will take it to the track to see what it does. I really have no idea what it will do. The last time I went I figured out the stock pump wasnt puting enought out. I know it pulls hard I am not sure exactly what the previous owner did in the rebiuld. I will try to get a good pic for my avatar!!

    thanks, will
