"I have just received some devastating news this morning from a reliable source. This is the kind of information that I never want to hear at 10 am Sunday morning. Indian Larry has gotten into a fatal accident last night while doing one of his famous stunts. He was surfing on his bike when he fell and hit his head. This happens at the Liquid Steel Classic Rally in Concord, North Carolina. The information is still sketchy at the moment, however, I got words that Larry is technically brain dead at a local hospital in NC. "

'Indian Larry' dies after stunt in Cabarrus

    Staff Reports

Indian Larry, a master motorcycle mechanic and stunt man, passed away this morning following an accident while performing Saturday at the Liquid Steel Classic and Custom Bike Series show at Cabarrus Arena and Events Center in Concord. He was best known for his appearances on Discovery Channel's "Great Biker Build-Off" show.

"He was riding and standing up on his seat," said Mike Downs, Cabarrus County deputy county manager. "The bike started to wobble and he was not able to regain control."

Indian Larry fell off the bike before a crowd of about 8,000. He was not wearing a helmet. Paramedics were standing by and aided him until he could be airlifted to CMC, Downs said.

"Cabarrus County along with the staff at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center sends its sincere condolences to the family of Indian Larry," said Robert M. Freeman, chairman of the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners. "Indian Larry was a man with great skill and talent as a mechanic and metal sculptor. He will be truly missed by his fans here in Cabarrus County and throughout the nation."

Indian Larry was best known for his eccentric nature, according to his official Web site. His rsum includes movie, video and television.

I knew it. When I saw him doing them senseless stunts on the Discovery channel I wanted to tell him to quit. No helmet or nothing and he stands up on his seat at highway speeds.

He will be missed but dam. He should of been more careful.

How much could of he been paid to do that stunt???

It surly wasn't worth his life. I saw it this coming for a while.

The track officials should of insisted on safety gear.
I bet the insurance company will drop the track for not making a helmet mandatory for stunts.

That's a real bummer. He was one of the only biker build-off guys who didn't have a gigantic ego.

Seemed like someone who would help a guy out no matter what.

    Very sad.:(

Downs said he believed the county wouldn't be liable for the accident because Desmedt was not working for the county but for Liquid Steel Productions, which couldn't be reached for comment.

Event promoters are required to carry insurance, said Cabarrus County Manager John Day.

"I don't know that Indian Larry performing without a helmet was one of the scheduled events. If it was, we weren't really aware of it," Day said. "I thought he was just there as a celebrity and would have his motorcycles on display."

I don't believe in manditory helmet laws, but I believe in helmets. All you in the winders, take heed. If you have anyone that loves you and doesn't want this to happen to you, do yourself a favor and get a good helmet.

I bought my first new bike in '92 from Roger Reiman; he won Daytona three times and the AMA National title once as a member of the Harley-Davidson racing team. When I picked up my new bike I asked him for riding advice. I expected all kinds of cornering, braking and riding tips, but got this instead:

Never ride without a helmet, ever not even around the block. (He told me his worst accident to date was on a customers test ride around the block without a helmet)

Never ride after drinking alcohol; ever.

If you follow these rules you'll probably live through being a motorcyclist.

Professional roadracer, knew more about riding a bike than anyone on this board will ever know and also a Harley-Davidson dealer for decades. He had a sign in his shop that said "If you have a 10 dollar head buy a 10 dollar helmet".

In my homestate there isn't a helmet law and I am in a massive minority of riders that wear one. My strong personal opinions aside I'm not bothered by in the winders as much as their attitude toward helmeted riders. If you wear a helmet you're some sort of **ssy. I've even been told that its more dangerous to wear one than not; just brilliant.

If you have kids or family that loves you, at least consider putting on a skid lid. I'd bet if Indian Larry had it to do over, he would.

    Just my .02.

Kinda reminds me of the dog that chases a car.
You know it's gonna happen, it's just a matter of when and where.

What a waist.......the guy had talent.
    Hopefully he's now at rest.

Guy was a huge talent, he was the man to teach a craft to younger people and enjoyed it......I'm not sure just how it went but he has a tatoo on his neck talking about how to live and die and he went just how he wanted too. Wish he was still here, I enjoyed watching him work and carry on.

  18. 3shields

    3shields Let's go, MOUNTAINEERS!!!

    part of the problem...

Part of the problem is people not accepting their own responsibilities, not that it is the promoters responsibility or the tracks. It's pure and simple....helmet usage should be the individuals choice. Helmet law injuries should also be the responsiblity of the rider. I do not believe you can take responsibility for someone else not choosing to wear a lid.
I am a survivor of a serious bike accident, three years ago july 30, and i was wearing a helmet. My choice! I was riding my softail in traffic and had someone in a 4 wheel drive truck simple turn left from the center lane, and ran over top of me and my bike. 20 years of riding experience doesn't prepare you for that type of incident. Had i not been wearing a helmet, i could very well not have survived the accident. That day i chose to wear one.

Larry rode in the style which he chose, and the gear he chose. He was a responsible adult who knew the risks, everytime he threw a leg over his bike.

Another brother lost....peace be with him and his family/friends.

Yeah, until a jacka88 in an '83 Dodge Monaco backs out in front of your bike!

My helmet stayed on for part of the accident. Apparently it was found some distance from me, strap still hooked, intact. Can't imagine what the impact would have done to my head.

A good portion of accidents involved motorcycles are the fault of CARS. Usually, the biker is just minding his/her own sweet business. I was, but there was no time to react to this guy's momentary touch of ADD.

    Wear your helmet. Ride defensively.

And for god's sake people, PAY ATTENTION when you're driving a car!!

Well..........I'm not a helmet wearer. However, I treat EVERY ride like I'm invisible to everyone else. I don't wanna ever relax that attitude.
