Hi guys, I have seen several older threads that provided great advice on how to restore old rally rims. I get the main points (taping off the chrome, using 0000 steel wool, etc.), but I still have two specific questions: 1. What is the best practice for dealing with the back of the rim (facing the brakes) and the sides (covered by the tire? Should I sand and paint with a rust-deterrent primer? What kind would folks recommend? 2. For the front of the rims, after sanding off the old black paint, what primer(s) should I use? I have seen videos where guys use an etching primer first, followed by another primer, before repainting in black. What do you all think about using etching primer, and what should the second primer be--an epoxy primer or something else? Thanks very much. I appreciate any and all advice!
Just Dupli color etching primer then top coat with a satin black or even gloss black from Dupli color or Krylon,..Sem,..etc
Got it, thanks very much. Something I read said you couldn't paint directly over etching primer. What about the back side of the rims--just etching primer or like a primer/sealer? Thanks again.
Ive done it forever,...never had an issue,...Epoxy primer is "better " but I wouldn't lose sleep over it
There’s $10 tape off stencils available now to make painting easier. eBay etc. I’ve also seen apply over stickers if you don’t want to paint.
I use a Eastwood product on the back just to prevent rust and the ensuing cleaning. I don't see it on their site - They changed the can. This is it. I made cardboard inserts to fill the slots in the spokes when painting the backs.
Hi all, just finished restore on my front 15x7 the usual 0000, tape and rustoleum before mounting the new Cooper Cobras. Used gloss engine paint on the front and regular satin black on the back Any suggestions on what to do once your done to protect the finish? I used car wax on the chrome. Thanks
