I'm driving through townhouse/condo developments near me with a laptop. Every cul de sac I stop in I can get right on to the internet!

Let's see if I can view any files...

Isn't that called wardriving or something?

I used to have a neighbor that I could piggyback when my wireless was down. I was encrypted though. There are some web sites out there dedicated to wireless hotspots (and those that just don't encrypt).

I had heard that some people leave a symbol of some sort on their curb notifying that they've got a signal that can be picked up.

most people do not have their system encrypted when they use wireless routers. criminals drive around with laptops, retrieving personal info. hmmmm, I know that no one in the buick community would do such a thing. :Brow:

Police Log: Yardley, PA September 14, 2004

A suspicious character driving around in a vintage Riviera was arrested by police today and charged with felony electronic theft of information and misdemeanor cruelty to livestock. Jeff Holthenrichs, 44, was found in possession of a computer laptop filled with hundreds of pictures he allegedly downloaded from Farmer Brown's computer. According to police the download was made possible utilizing a wireless connection and tapping into Farmer Brown's home computer from the street outside of his house.

Farmer Brown has a thriving local wool business and utilizes digital photography to communicate the various wool quality grades he has to prospective customers. When officers approached Mr Holthenrichs car and asked him what he was doing, he replied "Mutton, er, nuttin'". Police noticed an inflatable sheep sitting in the passenger seat with lipstick on and smoking a cigarette. Open on the dashboard of the car was a laptop running a slideshow of sheep.

Police noticed a glazed look on the suspects face which they at first presumed was due to drugs. Asking Mr Yardley to step out of the vehicle, they then conducted a complete search which did not turn up drugs, but did turn up the stolen photos on the suspects computer.

The officers confronted Holthenrichs with the evidence at which point the suspect denied any wrong doing. The officers pressed stating it would not do any good to pull the wool over their eyes. Holthenrichs responded, "Don't knock it until you've tried it". He then cocked his head at an odd angle and smiled broadly.

As police led the handcuffed Holthenrichs away, he could be heard muttering, "I've been a baaaaad boy...." over and over again. He was also reported to the S.P.C.A.

I wouldn't be able to retrieve fingerprints from a real sheep, but those plastic ones are a breeze (er, rumour has it). Sorry, I can't help you on this one. It sounds like you're up a creek without a wifi.[IMG]

    Lmao @ the "news" report.

I had mine open for awhile until I found another network (that was encrypted) that was popping up so I closed mine up as well. I've heard about people that spend the big money for a big connection and then rent out the codes for their network to neighbors for some money each month.

Oddly enough, I can't think of one glib comeback at the moment. Being at a loss for words usually isn't my strong suit.

    ROFLMFAO!

    Phunneeeeee!

I suppose that picture of me will make the rounds for years to come. :pp

And Ken, Dolly still likes me better.

I guess I did it the hard way. My computers are wired together, no wireless. I tell the wife and kids, if I can't run there, we don't need a computer there :Brow:

    ramble ramble

the motel i stopped at this summer on vacation had a wireless network,
it was wide open also. i couldnt believe it. national chain, i think holiday express.

WEP can be broken, especially if their is a lot of activity on the network.
encryption also slows down the throughput.

a good tradeoff is to forget about encryption, and just dont broadcast your SSID.
    also
if you just use the same couple of computers on the network,
lock it down by mac address.

also, take your laptop into your yard, if the signal reaches the street, adjust your
system so it doesnt. lower power, remove/adjust antenna, relocate entire acess point to a lower floor, whatever it takes.

i should just turn mine off, my laptop is at work.

if they really want in, nothing will stop them.
but doing anything removes 99.99 % of the threat,
unless you have something real valuable.

i believe sharing your broadband connection with your neighbors violates your TOS.
you could be held liable for thier losses.

    my 02 cents

    see ya
