Can the rubber plug be removed with the reservoir still bolted to the pump or do I need to take the two halves apart, looks like if I try to take the plug out by pulling it, it would just rip. If I take the two halves apart what do I need to torque the bolt to when I put it back together?

Plug should pull out fine. (I assume you are talking about the fill plug, no?)

Yes the fill plug, I remember a friend of mine had a convertible and he tried pulling the plug out and it just ripped in half.

it should just pull out but after 30 years they kinda get dry. if you happen to accdently break it you'll need to unbolt the pump and remove it. and remove the back cover for the pump. it should then fall right out. do a search on this board to find out how to fill and bleed the system.
