Required voltage to coil on 69 wcat 430ci?

I'm getting voltage readings of 5.5v at the coil when the ignition switch is on and 8.5v when running. Is this too low? If so what are the causes. Would low voltage at the coil cause coughing and lurching at higher rpm?

    Thanks.

That is all that the resistor wire will allow. What type of ignation are you currently running? Some require that you have 12 volts all the time. You will need to by-pass the wire or remove it completely.

That wire runs from the fuse box at the fire wall to the coil. It can be IDed by the cloth wrap around the wire (usually brown).

If all factory, you should have nearly 12 volts at the positive side of the coil while cranking the motor to start it.
