I would have to replace the ones in my car as well (wood grain....thank god )....do I need to take off the old decal in order to use the new one so they light up correctly? o No: ....I'll be looking to do this soon, so any info would be helpful...and also Greg: how much is it for a wood grain set? Very timely post as the trunk is the only project left to do on my car and the pictures you posted answered alot of my questions and the dash could use the new decals, so I will order some of those also. I bought my car in 1977, and ordered alot of parts in the early eighties that were available with no problem. Both quarter panels and the passenger fender required extensive massaging to get them straight enough to paint. It almost looked to me that they were rejects on the assembly line and the decision was made to sell them as parts, so that panel you show from rolling steel looks not to bad to me.
68-9 did not use decals. They are painted. Notice that the lettering is raised. Couldn't put a decal over that.
Yes, the old decal needs to come off. Should come off pretty easily. Use a small knife under a corner to get it started, and it should peel right off.
Very interesting... my 68 doesn't look like it is a decal. It just plain looks like c**p. Lots of wear around all the controls. Sure wish I could find a repro or NOS bezel around the controls, to match my NOS radio bezel
I have attempted to create a "decal" for the '69 a/c - heater control piece. It's the same as the later models size and lettering-wise, only grey & silver. The problem I have run into is the contrast issue between the silver and grey coloring. The original factory pieces were actually thin metal with paint. My repros on the later models are all silk-screened on Lexan. So, it's hard to match up the coloring. Nailed the grey, just can't seem to duplicate the silver in ink without it blending right into the grey. Anyway, as to the other areas of the dash on the '68 & '69s, they are indeed painted. An overlay decal could be designed for these, but between the raised lettering as well as the color issues as mentioned above, the results wouldn't be as good as they should be. I'll be dusting off the '69 piece work again later this summer. My printer tells me that there are new metallic inks that might work better than the stuff we used last year for our test pieces. More to come.
