Replacement Speakers

I was looking to replace the factory front speaker and get a speaker for my missing rear speaker for my 70 GS. I'm not looking to spend big bucks for Year One replacement speakers but maybe just some cheap Radio Shack speakers so the Factor radio will sound a little better and I will also have a rear speaker.

I remember reading an earlier post about the resistive differences from 1970 speakers and todays speakers but can't find it now. What is the resistive value I need on my speakers to work with the Factory AM/FM Radio.

    Thanks
    Matt

I would think some where between 4 and 6 ohms should work just fine, But you could always get a speaker with a midrange and tweeter built in for a 6x9 speaker and get better sound.

The factory speaker is a 10 ohms, putting a 4 or 6 may work, but is hard on the output transisitor. I would not do it. Transistors are not as forgiving as IC in todays decks. 8 Ohms at the min. They are a hard find in car speakers now days. Wire two four ohms in series if you have to. As the speaker works the resistance changes, a 4 ohm ranges between 2 and 6 ohms.

Hey Rich - about when did they switch from 10 ohms to 4 ohms for cars? - Bill

    Bill,

I don't know. Today they just have a min spec, say like 4 ohms. I've seen specs down to 2 ohms, even 1 ohm for a high end sub amp (That's real close to a dead short, for those that don't do electronics). The 10 ohms come from my 69 chassis manual. It's always safer to go higher than lower (Less of a load).

Rear speaker still available as new. Ask for a rear for an '81 Electra. Get a current harness connector from any GM in the bone yard. Dealer might have it too.

That's a good buy. I bought two, two years ago. Paid +/- 35.00/ea. at the time. Bought the second only as a spare fearing they might be discontinued.

    Everyone,

Thanks for all the replys. Again this board has a wealth of knowledge. Glad to be a Buick guy and not one of those other car lovers.

    Thanks again.

Thanks for the info on the rear speaker. Do you know if anyone still sells a 10 ohm speaker for the front? If so, do you have a GM part number?

I am trying to install the factory AM/FM radio and 8 track in a 70 GS, and will need front and rear speakers. Can I install two 6x9 10 ohm speakers in the rear, and a single one in the front? I am not too familiar with stereo equipment, and need a little help. If anyone else has done this and could help me with any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks!

If you still have an old original speaker I think there is someone out there who can rebuild them. Just not sure who. this is a good idea as the front speaker has a weird center attaching bracket that is tough to duplicate.

Thanks, Dave. I still have the speaker, but it is wasted. The cone is completely gone from the sun damage.

Does anyone know who can rebuild original 10 ohm speakers, or if there are replacements available?

couldnt you use one of of those things that convert line level speaker outputs into preamps and put a small amp to drive the speakers and have some good sounding speakers and not screw up the ohm load :Do No:

with that and a fm modulator you could have all the features like xm ipod etc

if that would work you would have a modern sounding system but look factory and wouldnt be to expensive

Thanks, Jim. Have you used these speakers in any of your cars? If so, how did you like them?

    Hi James,
We just finished a resto on a QQ GSX and the owner had his original AM radio converted to AM/FM stereo with Ipod jacks at this company listed. He also bought the dual fronk speaker from them. They also told him which 6x9 speakers to buy for the rear. The system sounds great, looks stock and he hooks up the Ipod in the glovebox. Give them a call.
