Can any one guide me in the right direction? 68 lark, stock rear. noticed a scraping noise from the passgr rear so naturaly i assumed brakes. pulled drum off and noticed the noise is from the axle while rotating it, the noise is not in the middle of the rearend but right near end. it also has some play in it, bout 1/4 inch either way. its like metal to metal scraping sound when spinning. is it a bearing? this is foreign teritory. ive done all my own work so far so i aint lettin this hold me up :bglasses: , just havent had any learning in this area yet. its a daily driver so im hoping this is something i can do on a weekend. detailed help would be greatly appreciated!! :beer how much time and $$ should this be? or what other problems should i look for.
    thanks. Matt

    Wheel Bearings

Hi Matt ,Sure sounds like wheel bearing,it would probably be best to replace both sides,if they are like my 64 skylark they are pressed on with a retaining collar, the axle should pull out when you remove the 4 retaining bolts that hold it and the brake backing plate on.( i cant remember if i could leave the brake assembly in place or not :Do No: )The seals on the axles will have to be replaced also(good idea while apart). If you have access to a press or know someone with one it helps in pressing collar back on.I split the collar(old one) with a cold chisel(safety glasses for sure!) and the bearing and collar then slide off. Probably about an hour a side? Bearings and seals ran me about $40.00usd a side, hope this helps some!..... :TU: ..Darren

Hey Thanks Man! good info for me :beer Yeah it sounds like mine is the same as your 64, i did notice i few access holes in the wheel stud plate(whatever its called) to access some bolts, is that the kind ur talking bout?? anyways, i dont have access to a punch... :Do No: is it something i can tackle myself or do i need a shop to take the ("collar"?) off and on? does the shaft just slide out and then right back in without any aligning issuses or is there more i need to watch for? Thanks for the reply!!!! its always fun fixing my ol buick myself and having the gained knowledge to go with it! :Smarty:

I would recommend bringing it to a machine shop. They will have a good press and should be able to change them no problem. My 225 had a leaky seal on one side when I bought it. I popped out the axle and brought it to a NAPA place that happened to be a bearing and machine shop as well. Head machinist knew exactly what I had and what had to be done.

For sure if you have a shop in town that can press the collar off and on works alot better, the access holes in the axle(wheel flange) are there to get at the bolts, and the axle should slide in and out with no alignment problems,at least in my experiences :) If there is that much play in shaft the seal should be done as well i would think.

    bearings

Yes, Please take it to a shop. Even if you get the old bearing off by cutting or other means, you will need at least 10 ton press to reinstall. I was over a friends house and he had problems with a 20 ton press installing ... Please do wear eye protection!!!! Good luck , Jim
