Is it possible to replace the mainbearings without removing the crank from the block? Actually it's because I don't want to take the heads off and it doesn't look like I can get the crank out with the pistons/rods in the block.
As long as you can get the pan off by raising the engine, the answer is yes. I did it on a Furd once. You have to do this very carefully, so as not to nick the crank journals. Do them one at a time.........I think they make a tool to use for removing the upper shells by rotating the crank.:bglasses:
A brass rivet in the oil hole with the head slightly thinner than the bearing shell. Then rotate crank to roll the bearing out. Must admit I've never done it on a Buick.
I've done it with aluminum cotter pins, put one in the oil hole and slowly turn the crankshaft to push the bearing out. Mark Ratzmann 61 Special wagon
