Removing rust from Stainless/Chrome

Discussion in 'Chassis restoration' started by BamaWildcat, Oct 30, 2006.

  1. I've got rust that has "dripped" down in a line over my stainless or chrome (don't know which) rear window moulding.

How do I remove the stain without killing the trim? Do I just buff it off, dip it in acid, or what? Any help is appreciated.

That's stainless steel....rub it shiny with 0000 steel wool. I'd spray some OSPHO on the rust all around and under the window trim. It will seal off the rust from any further staining. Make sure you wipe it off the trim, body paint and glass before it dries.

  3. The roof has been fixed, it is just an old picture. 0000 steel wool you say? Is that something I pick up at Wal-Mart or something I pick up from Eastwood?

Steel wool can be found at most paint stores or the paint debt of the big box stores.

Make sure its 0000 steel wool, any thing less will scratch the finish, you can find it at K Mart, WalMart depot stores etc.

Use 0000 steel wool from Home Depot or Lowes.

I usually follow it with Turtle Wax Chrome Wax/Polish...works very very well.

I always use SOS pads, works great but I dont know if its as fine as 0000.

  8. It's working decent

Tried the 0000 steel wool tonight. It is working good, but I can see this will be a tedious process. I still have some stubborn rust I will have to try to rub off. Check out the before and after shots:

Try using some chrome polish while using the steel wool.

This is the best product I have found to use after 0000 steel wool.

The Mythbusters did it with Coca-Cola and aluminum foil, looked great but was kinda sticky.

There's also the infamous buffing wheel and compound...let your motor do the hard part. Just remember to aim the wheel out the garage door cause that's where your trim is going, eventually.

I agree with the others about the Turtle Wax Chrome Polish, the stuff works great and dissolves the rust. Do what Adam suggested and apply it with the steel wool. :TU:
