My expierence is 4 out of 10 are broke, pretty common, or they break, no matter how careful you are. I definately understand your dilema (sp?), especialy if your at a yard, because of how tight it is, I usually leave em out of frustration

This happens to me most of the time. Got a solution for you.

Get a large finishing nail, I think it is 8d, largest you can find at Home Depot. Now, get a large magnet and rub the nail on the magnet (some are called super magnets because of their additional strength). Move the magnet to the end of the nail (pointed end) and leave it attached to the nail. Slide the nail head in the threaded hole. Most of the time you can "feel" the nail attract the broken end because it is magnetized. Slowly, slowly, slowly........withdraw the nail and the end will come out. Sometimes the broken end may contact the threaded section of the carrier and disconnect. Repeat the process again and you should be able to get the broken end out. Also, make sure the pinion pin is perfectly aligned, you don't want the weight of the pin pressing upon the broken end. You want the hole in the carrier to be in perfect alignment with the hole in the pinion pin.

Missed this latest discussion. Have a few #8 cases that need helicores due to errant drilling by previous owners. Without the center drilled cap screw as a guide, its easy to drill into threads in the carrier.

Ck out earlier thread for tips to prevent breaking the 8.5 carrier pin bolts & reference to the Matco pin bolt extractor kit.
