I have an engine I need to check to see if it is serviceable. It is located in an engine compartment with everything hooked up except the factory wiring harness. Can the engine be started with a remote starter switch and a hot wire from the battery to the negative side of the coil. or is there something else that must be done do get it to fire. :beer

Yes, you can start it with the engine hotwired. I once started a flat head on the garage floor with a can of gas and the engine hotwired.

Sounds like a plan I just like to use a remote switch easier than the screw driver method. I thought that was all I had to do! :beer

If you're going to run it for more than a few minutes, put a ballast resistor on the hotwire to the coil. If you don't, the points will fry pretty quick from too much voltage.

Phil- I just noticed that you said negative side of the coil in your post. The positive lead MUST be hooked to the positive side of the coil. If you hook up to the negative side, the points will probably become a miniature arc welder! For a ballast resistor, use a commonly found chrysler one, they're cheap and easy to find since they used them for 30 years(even on their newer stuff!).
