I have more steering backlash on my -70 Electra than I would like. I do understand that every connection, joint and gear in the steering linkage will impact backlash. But is there one certain place where it pays off more than others to start looking? I never touched a car steering system before, other than maybe on an RC car some time :)

You have to examine the complete system . The major point of , I assume you mean Looseness , in the system is the Centerlink . , Idler Arm and tie rod ends . But that doesn't rule out everything else . Ball Joints , Steering rag joint . Upper and lower arm bushings .

    Check every thing

After checking all that I usually tighten the box adjustment a little. 1/16 to 1/8 turn or so for every 100K miles.:D

Leave the steering box last on your list, check the other stuff first
