Red hot #6,8 header tubes during break in.

    Does anybody know why my number 6 and 8 header tubes were red hot during break in? Last night I started my motor for the first time and noticed that the 6, and 8 were red hot. I checked the timing and it was at 12 initial. It seemed to go away a little bit after the first 30 minutes.
    I looked at the spark plugs and the porculin is white and there is no signs of over heating. They do not have that tan color yet. I put around 100 miles on it last night, and checked them this morning and they are still the same looking, all though those three are white and the others are more rich looking with black deposits on the porculin.

    I wouldn't be too alarmed.....manifold distribution can cause some lean stuff with a no load condition. I have seen some of my cars do it over the years. Just think what they would look like glowing under the hood while your driving down the road, same difference, maybe worse..

    I've seen it also,seems like during break-in at a constant rpm w/o a load on the motor you will get a lean condition.
    Sometimes during break-in I've seen people put an industrial fan in front of the radiator,but what do I know,I consider "break-in the first pass at the track:TU:

    Ok, This morning I took the car to the local Auto shop in town. This guy races cars down the quarter. He checked the carb while running. It was causing a lean condition.
    He had me take it out of the car and he took it apart and while blowing out the holes, one was plugged. After he replaced the power valve, he put it back together.
    I installed it and with a little adjustment, its running better. Next he checked the timing, which was set after the first few seconds of break in, and it was off big time.
    So if the timing is off, and the carb was causing a lean condition, then that maybe the reason the exhaust tubes were red hot on those two or three?
    By the way, he took his Raytec temp gun and three of them were like 2000 degrees. All of the others were around 450 degrees.
    I have never seen that before!!!
