I purchased one of those review mirrors with the built in map light. The mirror has some tarnish and needs to be replaced. I need help getting the mirror out. There is a grey seal that holds the mirror in place but seems impossible to remove. How do I get the mirror out?

Unscrew the mirror screw holding the mirror to the stalk. Take the mirror to the automotive mirror shop and have them do it. If they ruin it...they can replace it.

    George,

I did the same and found one in the junk yard a few weeks back on a Skylark.
    I grabbed it!

When I ohm'd it out I believe the bulb (Incandscent) is out.
I took the little lens for the light to shine and also used on the the switch, out.
Used a jewelers screwdriver....popped the lens out.
Then I realized the bulb is a weird one also.
It now flops around in there and I need to fix it.
I want to put something solid state (bright LED) or to replace the wrong windshield mounted one.

I can't figure out w/ o damaging the casing, Etc taking it apart.
There is a rubber gasket kinda around the thing.

Never heard of a auto Mirror place as you mention.
Is this a place that would replace cracked winshields Etc?
    Thanks

I haven't done it myself, but from everything I've read, you warm the gray surround and carefully peel it off with your fingers. You might have to wear gloves, since it's hot.

Yes Scott, A windshield place can do it. And Brian might be correct. Sometimes thay have that stick/tacky stuff that can be loosened by heat.:TU:

Yes, the mirror can be taken apart by warming the rubber trim.

As for the bulb, do not make more work for yourself...that is probably the original bulb and it lasted 35+ years.....just replace it and you are set.

    1. Heat up the rubber bezel and the glass lens with the hairdryer by going back and forth. Do NOT burn the rubber. The object tis to make the rubber pliable and to soften the mastic on the back of the mirror. This rubber membrane curls over the edges of the glass and extends across the whole back of the glass.

2.Once heated begin working the edges of the membrane back to expose the edge of the lens. Reheat it as needed to keep the rubber soft and pliable. There is no need to force it. Reheat it instead.[/QUOTE]

    3. You should now have the rubber edges flexible so that you can pull back the edges just like a pair of old gums. When it gets to this point you can see at various places the back of the edge of the lens we are ready to insert the stick.

    4. See the pics where I show what the membrane looks like with the lens removed. Now the insertion of the stick takes place where I show the rubber being pulled down with my thumb and the other pic where the end of the spoon is located. The object here is to not force it and rip the membrane or to marr the back of the lens. It you marr the back the resilvering process will never be what you want because the back side will no longer be smooth.

5 After insertion begin working it around the lens clockwise heating the rubber in front of the stick's position periodically to keep everything soft and pliable. Work the rubber in front of the sticks position after heating by pulling it back just like gums.

    6. After little over one half the way the lens will pop out. The metal is stainless so polish it while the lens is away for the resilvering. This is the best time to clean the plastic bezel edge and apply some 303 to keep it soft for the reinstallation. You can now buy a new map light lens cover or bulb as need.

I remove the mirror like Jim L. says, and send it out to be re-silvered.

Hemmings lists a bunch of places that do it.

I listed a reliable place I use to resilver these in the posts linked above. Since the glass is cut in a wedge in order to give it a day-night feature, you need a donor mirror or to send out your original glass.

    Jimbo and Paul and Gang,

    1) I got the bulb at the local auto emporium.
    It's a #561 12.4 Watt Sylvania
In the process I checked the rest out with a meter and added a bit of tension to the switch spring, and cleaned and lubricated.
    "Works well" On and Off...

    2) Was on the phone most of the day calling places.
I looked into Silver Plating, both locally and afar.
    I never heard about it till now/ here on V8Buick;
No one does it locally here, Seems like a dying business?
I also looked @ doing it myself ...........
Too many chemicals and such .......
Most expensive to replate, but I'm sure it is worth it.
Jim, I'll call http://www.reflectedimage.com/ tomorrow for a quote.
I can see where the glass is thicker on the top vs/ the bottom for day/ night.
I see reflected image is in Connecticut...that will require me to ship out and ship back.
They do look like they do great work.

    3) I also looked into directly replacing the mirror, and most today are not 12",
but only 10" long w/ the day and night feature.

    My conclusion:

In talking to a glass mirror place about an hour and a half due southwest, towards Chattanooga, is they will cut me another for 12 dollars while I wait.
I told them I'll call back tomorrow as their hours did not coincide w/ me getting there today.
They said they can do it, so I'll take the mirror to them and see what they can do...
I'll also call or write reflected image.

Man, all this for a mirror?
    Any suggestions/ Opinions greatly appreciated?

    Thanks
    :beer

Still working on a radio, Checked many junk yards the past two weeks and I got the speaker out of the Skylark @ Pick-A-Part. Clusters' relamped and back in and works well.

Yep, That's what I'm thinking also.
