Hi, I am trying to find out what gears my 70 Riviera has in the differential. I have found info on other buicks for this but not for the Riv. any info would be helpful. thanks

I think the easiest way (without removing the cover) is

Get the rear wheels on jack stands, then chalk a line on the tire where it would hit the ground. The chalk a line on the bottom of the drive shaft. Spin the tire one revolution (360 degrees), and count the number of times the drive shaft turns. For instance, slightly more than 3 turns =308 (3 turns + about 10 degrees).:TU:

If you do the above method, be sure both rear wheels turn the same amount, or block one, count the revs of the other one, then divide by two.

Better yet, look on the back of the axle tubes, just outboard of the center section, there should be an id code stamped somewhere (may need to get the wire brush). I'm not sure about 1970 codes, but one in '71 they were three letters, like "BON" or something like that. Post what you find here or in the "Got Gears" or maybe "Chassis Restoration" forum, somebody there will let you know exactly what you've got (assuming nobody has swapped out any internals)
