    Yes, a '67 Chevelle 12 bolt will bolt up in a '68-72 A-body.
The '67 Chevelle 12 bolt will be 1/2" narrower on each side than your '69 r/e & you may have to go to adj upper arms to get pinion right. Don't overvalue the c-clip elims & axles that much, if the axles are stock 12 bolt pieces.

I assume your car is strictly a drag racer. You don't want to use a spool for a street car.

its a street/strip car I wouldn't mind a spool... but for $500 I can't say no since its already built... I could always change the diff n gears if everythings there for that price...

oh yeah I forgot to mention that the chevelle it came out of had a 502 BB in it.... so I don't think those are stock-style axles and the guy had his car tubbed with a ford 9" so he's dumpin the old rear for cheap.

Since the rear has had c-clip elims installed, smart to ck what axles you have, they could easily be stock & possibly, on their last leg. If they're 33 splines from Strange, for the $500, sounds like you have a pretty good deal. Can always sell off a 33 spline Strange spool & go to a HD 33 spline Eaton posi, if a posi is a must on the street.

the axles are from moser, I just sent him an email asking what type of axles they are... hopefully 33 spline... with a spool I would almost expect it but if not, what splines are stock ones?

Oem 12 bolt was 30 splines. The Mosers ought to be fine.

ok they ARE 30 spline he just got back to me... but they ARE also moser's... can this thing live or is it gonna blow up on me? I mean he had a 502 in the car... but didn't put many miles on it...

dammit this is what I hate about this hobby... some guy came along and gave him $1000 for the rear... and I can't beat that right now... so there it goes... BUT I have a lead on a built 10 bolt for a track car... so I figure it's pretty well worked... and for about $200 never even used. It originally came out of a late 80's caprice cop car. could the RIGHT 10 bolt work for me or am I gonna blow it up?
thanks for all the help with the other questions...

If you mean the entire Caprice rear axle, it will not work.

You need one from a 71-2 Cutlass/Skylark that is the corporate 8.5" and is the most cost effective rear to install.

I'm thinkin about just tearin down the 69 10 bolt in the car and installin moser axles and an nice posi unit... with 3.73's... what else should I look into to build that one...? right now it's a non-posi 2.73 stock rear (yeah it kinda sucks) but anyways... should I look for a 71-72 8.5 or is the one I got the same thing?

  13. if the 69 10 bolt in your car is the original Buick rear then you wont find a posi carier very easily. the 68-70 buick 8.2 used a specific carrier that has 2 different carrier bearings sizes and nobody makes the carriers anymore, like George said the best thing to do is get a 10 bolt from a 71-72 skylark or cutlass and build it.. i just bought a posi carrier for my 72 for 100.00 i can buy new gears for 150.00 in any ratio i want.. i used to be a proponent of the original 8.2 but George finally convinced me on the 8.5 rear.. it's the least exspensive way to go..

George has a point that the 8.5 A-body rears are the way to go for many, but I'd suggest the 8.5's increased torque capacity is what makes them desirable over other 10bolts, not some folks ability to able to throw them together cheaply with used gears & near wornout posis.

For best performance, one does need to factor in what it cost to go through a used #8 or #9 posi carrier, then build the rear with quality parts... Just installing new clutchs in a stock 8.5 clutch type carrier may cut it for the putt-a-round cruiser car, but not for streetcars that have to hook hard at the track. When one starts adds up the price to truly rebuild the oem carrier to performance specs, the new Eaton posi carriers look very attractive, esp if one can get into them for under a $350.

Good luck on your r/e build.

Well if you need a rear done i can build one for you. Sounds like your money is pretty tight though. You get what you pay for though. I would say save up a get it good then it should not need to be looked at for a good long time. That is just my 2 cents. and if you are interested let me know. I am here at this email address all the time. Jim
