Mentioned this in a thread I posted in Junkyard jewels, but figured I'd get a better response here. I have an opportunity to buy a GM 10 bolt Posi geared 4.11 out of a '79 monte carlo. Will this bolt up to my 1970 Skylark? If so, does anything need to be modified to fit? Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks!
Might ck the rear closely & see if some one has swapped in an earlier 8.5 A-body rear (has bolt-in axles) or earlier 12 bolt Chevy rear. Personally have built over 2 dozen 8.5 A-body rears & a few 12 bolt rears for this later chassis. The earlier rears will fit with a few mods & the correct offset wheels. Otherwise, the rear is stock 7.5 A-G body unit thjat has had gears installed, or possibly a transplanted 8.5 TurboT-GN-442 rear that someone has swapped gears into. Both will have 2.6" diam axle tubes. Geometry wise of these later style rears are better suited for late A-G body use. Good luck. Got Posi? :3gears: Roger
Found out what car the rear end is originally out of, a '75 el camino. I've been told that it will bolt up but want to make sure. I measured the rear end and everything seems like it should fit.
Main problem is the '73+ Abody rears have a wider spread where the upper control arm mounts are. This makes them near impossible to mount in a '64-72 A-body. Have run across all kinds of "contraptioneering" where folks have tried to make the '73+ style rear fit in other body styles, but the effort was always a lot more trouble than just using the correct housing & axles. Other problems: - shock mounts are inboard on the '73-77 A-body/'77+ B-body housings. - entire r/e is 3/4" wider than a '69-72 12 bolt or '71-72 8.5 A-body rear & 1 3/4" wider than early style A-body rears. In the field, I usually gut the posi's out of the '73+ A-body c-clip rears, & grab a more desirable housing. When building a '73+ A-body rear for a customer, the bolt-in axle housing & axles are the way I'll go, not the Chevy c-clip style. Got Posi? :3gears: Roger
