Will rear backing plates and drums from a 1970 8.2 rear end bolt onto a 1972 8.5 rear end?
    Thanks

Yes, should be the exact same & use the same dimension 9.5" rear drum. The style used on Chevy 10 bolts & 12 bolts will also work. The "Chevy" style has a spotwelded on flange. This style also used under early 2nd Gen GM F-bodys & all X-bodys through '74 model.

A-body oddball backing plates are an exception. Only time one would run into this, is if one of the two rears is out of an A-body stationwagon. Most pre '73 A-body station wagons used backing plates that were stamped differently than same year A-body. Basically had a different offset, in order to accept wider brake shoes. Many times these SW backing plates also had a center hole in them that allowed for larger diam wheel bearing to pass through. Though different, the A-body station wagon backing plates can be used with std width 9.5" drums. have used them myself before with later alum drums.

Confused or needing nice rear backing plates, have several pallets of the most common styles.

Thanks Roger, I currently have a 3.42 posi in my car now. I have an extra 72 8.5 rear end w/o the brakes that I will make into a posi as I have two 3-series posi carriers sitting around.
I also have an extra set of used 3.42 gears that I might like to trade out for some 3.73-3.90.

Roger, I just found out they are off of a Chevy 12 bolt, will this be OK?
    Thanks

    Tim,
Yes, the "Chevy" style backing plates will fit. Will be a direct bolt on, as long as you're not trying to mount on the the seldom seen 8.5 A-body A-10 (big axle bearing) 8.5 A-body rear.
