Hello Board, I'm restoring a 68GS400 and need to know what color the rear axle was. It's a 3.42 10 bolt posi. At some point in it's life, someone painted it a light grey with a bit of tan in it. Any help would be appreciated. The body is finally back on the frame and it needs to sit on four tires instead of the two it currently has. Thanks in advance, Gil Bourcier Frederick, MD USA 69 Riviera GS 68 GS400 Conv. 4spd
Gil, There seem to be various answers on this one. I have heard cast color with just the rear facing back side painted black as looking from the rear of car. Most guys seem to just paint the whole thing black. I personally like the all cast paint color to resemble raw cast iron. Bill
I second what Bill said! Word is, some rears were just painted on the back side so they didn't look rusty at the time of delivery... On my '66's, I couldn't find a trace of black paint on it any where!.....There were only two green stripes painted around the axle, I guess they were factory ID markings. The stripes were painted on before the brake lines were installed. I just repainted it yesterday using 'Metal Mask' paint from POR-15....it gives it that 'bare naked rear' look :moonu: Here's a before and after shot:
Kudos!!! The Metal Mask looks sharp & being a POR15 product, will hold up a ton better than Castblast in a can. :3gears: Roger
